The Chihuahueno It originates in Mexico and receives its name from the Mexican State of Chihuahua, place where it was discovered and domesticated from the wild, unlike the belief that exists in some countries that the dog gave the name to the state since the word “Chihuahua” means “arid and sandy” in rarámuri, language of the Tarahumara people. Although it is known as Chihuahua, the official name of the breed is Chihuahua, Chihuahua is the name adopted in United States for the race.

It is believed that they are descended from a race of ancient Hispaniola island, similar but slightly larger, associated with royalty in the Toltec civilization known as the Techichi (found remains of smaller dogs in ancient tombs at Mexico.
