History

The Mojave Spotted was developed to preserve the bobcat in the mojave desert. The mojave desert is located in the southwestern United States, riding through California, Nevada and Arizona.

The Gato of the mojave desert was discovered in 1980 by April Langford, an American breeder. Your number has not been registered, but the colonies lived under bushes or in burrows to protect the young from the harsh desert climate.

The first colony he observed was in the small town of Hesperia, in southern california. All its members were very homogeneous in terms of their morphology: they were bigger than the domestic cats and they had powerful and raised bodies and very muscular legs that ended in feet polydactyls (of 6 to 7 fingers on each leg). His coat color was not uniform -silver, brown, gold or even black-, but they all had the same pattern of spots. Later, April Langford realized that the individuals of the different colonies shared the same appearance, except for the color of its fur.

April Langford decided to breed them to preserve this feline from extinction, endemic to mojave desert. He observed that it reproduced very slowly and began to disappear. But, his first attempts were unsuccessful, since these wild cats were not allowed to be tamed.

In 1984, accidentally found a litter of kittens under a juniper. How food was scarce during the winter, it seemed that their mother had abandoned them to survive herself. He decided to take them in instead of abandoning them to their fate. He placed them in a closed enclosure under a cedar and fed them a substitute for cat milk.. But, they were not domesticated and remained wild.

April Langford decided to cross them with him Bengal cat, also a spotted cat, which was a cross between a Domestic cat and European wildcat, the cat bengal leopard. The result was a cat thirteen with a spotted fur. But, even though they were born and raised in captivity, the first generations were still wild and were not domesticated.

At that time, to the polydactyl cats they were often called Hemingway cats, in honor of the famous American writer Ernest Hemingway. A Hemingway they gave him a gata polidรกctila, which is known to have given birth to many litters.

Cats with six or seven toes on some legs are not a special breed.; on the contrary, they are found in many different breeds. It is simply an inherited genetic defect that can occur in any individual, regardless of race or gender. Most of the time, the sixth or seventh extra toes are on the front legs, but sometimes they are in the back, and even more rarely in all four. Far from being a disease or having any effect on the health of the animal, this particularity is rather an advantage, since it gives you greater agility.

April Langford decided to call the race he was trying to create Mojave Spotted, in reference both to its geographical origins and to the stains that its representatives present.

In the Decade of 1990, the natural habitat of mojave desert wildcat was being invaded by construction, and the feline, already in danger of extinction, was disappearing.

April Langford accelerated his breeding program by continuing to cross the Mojave Spotted with the Bengal cat, but also with him American Polydactyl Cat of other races. From 2007, these crosses are no longer necessary. In effect, the created population had reached a sufficient number of individuals to be able to continue breeding only from the cats already obtained, inbred.

It also, with the passing of the generations, the Mojave Spotted began to be tamed, although there is still a long way to go.

Breed recognition and popularity

The only organization that recognizes Mojave Spotted is the International Progressive Cat Breedersโ€™ Alliance (IPCBA), an organization specialized in new breeds of cats.

So, no major body recognizes this cat, whether international -such as the World Cat Federation (WCF), The International Cat Association (TICA) o the International Feline Federation (FIFรฉ)- or national, as the American Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA), la Canadian Cat Association (CCA), el British Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) o the Official Book of Feline Origins (LOOF) French. Given its extremely confidential distribution, there is little chance this will change in the near future.

In any case, the Mojave Spotted was created primarily as a reaction to the extinction of the mojave desert wildcat, to try to keep it another way, not with the aim of developing a new breed and spreading it as widely as possible.

Just a hatchery, Cheshire Cattery, with sede in EE.UU., participates in the development of Mojave Spotted. Giving cats are systematically neutered, to avoid parallel breeding and maintain control.
All of these factors combined limit the reputation of the Mojave Spotted.

Physical characteristics

Larger than most house cats, the Mojave Spotted it's a long and powerful body type (or long and substantial).

The body have strong bones and muscles, but the skin on the belly is slightly distended, so they are not too prominent. The back is prolonged with a tail that can be short or medium long.

The legs they are long, wide and very muscular, slightly larger at the rear than at the front. The vast majority of individuals are polydactyls, that is to say, have of 6 to 7 fingers on one or more feet. This specificity is due to a dominant gene, that is to say, it is enough for an individual to have inherited this genetic mutation from one of their parents to be thirteen. In general, the phenomenon is symmetrical, that is to say, affects both hind legs (that normally only have 4 fingers) or the front two (in which there are usually 4 fingers and a spur), the latter being the most common case. Some individuals are even polydactyls on all fours. In all cases, the claws are powerful and sharp.

The head it is quite fine, slightly oval and medium in size. Ears are medium to large, with a wide base and rounded tips. Some individuals have a tuft of hair at the base. The eyes they are big, oval and widely spaced. The snout it's wide, short and square. The leather of the nose, that is to say, the part where the nostrils meet, it is solid pink, black or brown. Last, whiskery areas are prominent.

The fur of the Mojave Spotted it's short and silky. Accepted colors and patterns are brindle, the leopard, snow leopard, the rose window, Marten, Brown, the fawn, the silver, blue and charcoal. On the other hand, the coat has dark spots that may fade with age.

But, remember that the Mojave Spotted is still a very new and developing breed. So, It is possible that, in the future, and in particular in the context of a possible recognition by some important organization, details are added about the appearance that this or that part of your body should have. It also, there may also be changes in your current appearance.

Varieties

The Mojave Spotted comes in 4 varieties:

  • Mojave Spotted short-tailed polydactyl;
  • Mojave Spotted semi-long-tailed polydactyl;
  • Mojave Spotted short-tailed;
  • Mojave Spotted medium long-tailed.

The same litter can combine representatives of the four varieties.

Apart from differences in the number of toes or the length of the tail, all individuals of the breed have the same physical appearance and temperament.

Character and skills

The Mojave Spotted developed a handful of decades ago in response to the extinction of the mojave desert wildcat. Numbers are still low, so you have to be cautious when generalizing about their temperament. But, whatever the individual observed, your wild ancestors are never far away in your family tree. Although he appreciates the company of man, this wild cat is still very independent, and only with successive generations is domestication possible. In any case, it is difficult to have him locked up, so you can't be happy in a flat, even more so when it is very active and its hunting instinct is still very present.

They need a garden to thrive, and they won't hesitate to explore beyond it if they get the chance: it is difficult to contain them in a concrete environment. In fact, being extremely curious, they usually have a strong desire to exceed the limits of their territory. Agile and athletic, they don't get tired of climbing trees, search and capture small prey, and even playing in the water, as they are one of the few cat breeds that love water.

As the breed is still new and developing, it's hard to say if he Mojave Spotted will eventually behave like most house cats, and when will, as successive selections are made. But, it is true that with each new generation, being increasingly away from the wild cat, becomes a little more tame.

Health

Since the Mojave Spotted is still very new and is in full development, information about your health and, in particular, about the possible diseases to which you are predisposed.

On the other hand, a trait inherited from European wildcat from which it descends, and that explains in part that the latter is close to extinction, is its very low fertility. the number of litters (from one to three a year) is comparable to domestic cats, but instead the number of kittens they produce (of 1 to 3 at most) is significantly less. Obviously, this is not unrelated to the fact that the number of specimens of the breed grows very slowly.

History

The German Longhair Cat and the German Angora Cat share a tangled history, which includes a deviation through the Traditional Long Hair (Original), the European Long Hair and the German Forest Cat, before eventually becoming a single breed of "German Longhaired Cat".

The German Longhair Cat has waited a long time to be recognized internationally, although since 1929 there is a breed standard and a point scale. The only thing that was missing until a few years ago was a registered breed that corresponded to this standard.. After the 2nd World War, that interrupted cat breeding in Germany, the only indigenous breed of German longhair cat was considered extinct.

In the beginning there was the Cat of Angora which was imported to Europe. Through crossing with other long-haired cats it became the Persian, although the term "angora" became a generic term meaning "long hair". From the Decade of 1920, the preferred conformation in England and France gave rise to the cats we now call Persian Cats "old style", that is to say, They were "Persians with a nose", as opposed to modern brachycephalic Persians (flat-faced).

Long-haired cats in Germany were generically called Angoras and they were raised for the color, not by conformation. Biologist and zoologist Dr.. Friedrich Schwangart (1874-1958) criticized that, in general, did not meet the โ€œHochzuchtperserโ€ standard ("high breed Persian") seen in british persians, so he created separate standards for the Persian cat and the German Longhair Cat in 1929, describing the differences between the two types. From that moment on, the breeders of ยซAngorasยป had to decide whether to breed British-style Persians or more natural-looking German longhairs. Schwangart hoped that the German Longhair Cat, with your hair silkier and easier to wash, became the most natural counterpart of the Persian cat who had been raised in Britain for decades. The German Longhair Cat was exhibited and recognized for the first time at the national level at the Exhibition of the Federation for the Breeding and Protection of Cats in 1930 In Berlin. In the following years it was seen frequently in cat shows and in 1932, the German Longhair Cat ยซFox of the Rhine Castleยป, owned by Dr. Heine en Leipzig, became a federal winner.

With the standards established in 1929, the types of long-haired cats were divided into 2 categories in the ยซClassification, Pedigrees and Systems of House Cats" and these should not be crossed to maintain their different types (in Britain, the first Persian Cats, Angoras and long-haired british natives they had interbred to create a single Long haired persian). There was more information in the Schwangart post of 1932 ยซTraining and breeding of domestic cats (results and problems)ยป, in which it was pointed out that other long-haired breeds were the german long hair founded by Schwangart himself and, in the previous two years, the Burmese breed appeared in Paris (that is to say, the Khmer / Birman).

In May of 1935 breeding was officially allowed German Longhair Cat under the auspices of the single state society โ€œKatzenverein des Deutschen Reichesโ€ (German Reich Cat Club), which was the only breeding club at that time. It was grouped in the long-haired class along with the Persian Cat and the Burmese cat, and followed the Schwangart standard. In October of 1939 was recognized by the Confรฉdรฉration Internationale Fรฉline (CIF) como "Borealis" o "Boreali" (ยซNorteยป). The CIF was the predecessor of the Fรฉdรฉration Internationale Feline (FIFe) and had been founded by the Societa Felina Italiana, the Paris Cat Club and the Swiss Federation. World War II interrupted the breeding program and the German Longhair stagnated for several years before, apparently, to become extinct. After the Second World War, the DEKZV, the only cat breeding club in Germany until 1969, he again used the race name ยซAngoraยซ. Until 1965, the German Longhair Cat (which lost most of its players during the war) and the Persian cat they were bred under the same name and the old standard, that he did not distinguish the races according to their conformation.

Unlike in the Persian cat, the German Longhair Cat was not sponsored by a feline association, possibly due to hostility between then-board members and Schwangart. In 1965, the name of the breed ยซAngora" He was removed, leaving only the Persian cat. The German Longhair Cat it was simply forgotten. When the german longhaired got going again, there was a debate on the name of the breed: ยฟGerman Angora cat or German Longhair Cat? For a time, the German Angora cat he was raised like him Domestic long-haired cat, and the German Longhair Cat it was the traditional long hair (original).

Dagmar Thies reported in 1979 that Mrs.. Renate Aschemeier had managed to locate german longhair cats from original bloodlines and had bred them at the Blasheimer factory since 1968. These cats were considered very typical representatives of the breed and later their descendants would be useful in re-establishing the breed..

The German Angora cat he grew up with that name since the year 2000, but it was not recognized by any feline association and, on the other hand, it was a registered trademark. The breeders of the German Angora cat they affirm that there is no german longhair cats authentic because they have become extinct. The history of modern breeding of the German Angora/longhair cat began in the year 2000 with Dr.. With. Brigitte Leonhard with her long-haired white cat Shiva. According to Bettina Muenter, Shiva was born on a farm in September 2000. The conditions were very poor, but Mรผnter got two white kittens: a strange-eyed white female they named Shiva and a male named Romeo. Unfortunately, Romeo's errant tendencies forced him to be castrated.

In 2001 came across a Burmese black cat x Domestic called Bommel, and then, in 2002, with a Persian cat blue. This sowed the seed of the recreation of the ยซGerman Angora catยป that Prof.. Friedrich Schwangart called โ€œGerman long hairโ€ (Deutsche Langhaar).

In 2003, la Sra. Mรผnter bought two stallions British shorthair, and the sharp purple "Alfons of Golden Kennel" (Rossini) played a special role in founding the German angora cat.

In 2004, Rossini crossed with Shiva and gave rise to a silvery blue torbie, Ashanti (later renamed "Isis"), what happened to Britta Steckelbach, and a short haired sister named Askara. The Sra. Steckelbach crossed Ashanti with the British Longhair โ€œJo-Jo of Sandokanโ€. The two women decided to create a race, but after discussing it with an important association they decided that their ideas did not fit with established feline fashion, So they founded the โ€œGerman Angora Cat Club.โ€ (GACC) in 2005 with other interested breeders who wanted to create a natural feline breed.

In 2005 there was a growing number of breeders interested in preserving or recreating the German Longhair Cat under the name of German Angora cat. They found foundation cats among free-range farm cats that approached the standard of German long hair de Schwangart. The herd book of the German Angora cat opened in 2005. The names of the founding kennels were Bettina Mรผnter (ยซvom Allerfeinstenยป) y el de Britta Steckelbach (ยซof Mystic German Angorasยป). (Although Mrs.. Munter claimed that there was no place for them in the established feline, Anneliese Hackmann, President of the German Edelkatze eV and the WCF, supported his vision from the start).

In 2006 the GACC was affiliated with the WCF and the development of the breed was more focused. Unfortunately, there were disagreements over foundation animals and breeding plans. The Sra. Hackmann suggested that breeders dissatisfied with the GACC move to Deutsche Edelkatze eV. In response, la Sra. Mรผnter and Mrs.. Steckelbach registered the name ยซGerman Angora catยป to prevent long haired mixed breeds from being passed off as German Angoras. Only GACC breeders could use the name. Breeders who had joined Deutsche Edelkatze eV needed a new name for their breed. They also rewrote the pedigrees so that the ancestors of the German Angora cat were retrospectively documented as German long hair. German longhairs obtained formal recognition (a sore point with the breeders of Angora Alemรกn), so the German Angora cat Happened to be called European longhair cat to gain recognition as a long-haired equivalent of the European shorthair cat.

Until 2007, when the German Longhair Cat, the Angora Alemรกn and the german longhaired they were considered synonyms of the same race. The German Longhair Cat was bred to fit the old image. Both breeds were described as very similar and both had been crossed with Persian Cats old-fashioned to improve conformation and coat. the Board of Directors of the first Cat Club of German Angora discarded the idea that they were the same race, which led to a dispute that divided the group of breeders. In 2009, el GACC (including its founders, Bettina Munter y Britta Steckelbach) applied for recognition of the German Angora, but it was rejected. Munter and Steckelbach tried to put obstacles to the breeders of the German Longhair Cat, but they finally lost in a legal battle.

In 2010 the German Longhair Cat sought breed recognition and several cats were evaluated at a Deutsche Edelkatze exhibition in Grefrath-Oedt. Unfortunately, WCF rejected application for recognition. WCF recognized the Traditional Long Hair (TLH, renamed as Original Long Hair due to trademark issues over a paper record that prefixed numerous breed names with โ€œTraditionalโ€) presented by South African breeders. This breed was an old-style Persian in the Silver and Gold color series. A WCF judge suggested that Original Longhair could be seen as a collective name for primitive longhaired cats and suggested that the Long German Hair should be considered part of that group. This was rejected by most breeders of the German Longhair Cat because the vision of Prof. Schwangart was that of a cat other than the old type Persian. A few raised and exhibited their cats as TLH, but many stayed with the name of German Longhair Cat.

The ยซDeutsch Langhaarยป (DLH, long hair german), with its distinctive type and not Persian, was finally recognized by the WCF at the general assembly of 2012 with a revised standard that, However, still based on Schwangart's description. The few breeders who had tried to obtain recognition through the traditional way (original) long-haired could now raise the German Longhair Cat. In the same general assembly, WCF also recognized TLHs in all other colors.

In 2012, the breeders of German Angora cat they again requested the recognition of their cats, this time under the name of European Long Hair, and with the support of the Internationaler Royal Cat Club (IRCC) y de Mr Stein. The European Long Hair was recognized and the standard was the same as that of the European shorthair cat, except for fur length. Not all german angoras they met that standard. To accommodate the breed name change, The German Angora Cat Club changed its name to the German Cat Club. In 2013, the IRCC and the Katzenverein Leverkusen e.V. (KVL) agreed to treat the European longhair cat and to the one of German long hair due to their similar breeding goals and common ancestry. Ancestral cats were fully recognized without being considered "experimental". Depending on the association, descendants could be registered as German Longhair Cat or European Long Hair. But, in 2014, Herr Stein revoked the recognition of the European Long Hair and, default, the German Angoras they became Long Hair German. The clubs associated with each breed eventually agreed that the two breeds were equivalent.. The German Cat Club (GACC) appears to be inactive since 2014 and in July 2015 there were hardly any breeders of ยซGerman Angora catยซ.

Physical characteristics

By the standards of the time, both the Persian Cats as the German longhair cats they had a compact conformation, short sturdy legs, a broad head with a relatively short and wide muzzle and moderately small ears (similar to those of the European wildcat). Both had rather short, well-carried tails., level back and long coat (with age differences, seasonal coat and pregnancy to watch out for). And in both cases a "half Angora" type with a slender body or a narrow, pointed face was not desirable..

But, the Persian cat was described as thicker, with a rounded head and a prominent forehead that fell sharply towards a wide, short snout that gave an "angry" expression. (that is to say, a shorter face). The coat of the Persian cat it was denser and woolly, with a well developed collar, and cats were bred with size and density in mind. In contrast to the Persian cat, the German Longhair Cat had a more moderate head: a less prominent and tapered forehead that gently curved upward from a longer nose with a gentler slant. The conformation was less compact, the movement more fluid and the tail longer than that of the Persian. In essence, the German Longhair Cat did not allow the short face and prominent forehead of the Persian cat and in profile the face resembled that of the Short Brindle Hair.

The German Longhair Cat it was in the same colors and patterns as the Persian: monocolor/autocolor (black, blue, cream, Red and white), bicolor, tortoisehsells (with or without white), ยซmasksยป (colourpoints), smoked, Chinchilla (tipped), peach (smoky red / cameo), silvers and tabbies both โ€œtigerโ€ (mackerel) like "marble" (Classic).

The description given for the "German Longhair Cat" it was that of a cat with a gently sloping forehead, not bulky or too round, traveling a flat curve or with a slight drop to the arch of the nose. Somewhat long nasal bridge, straight or very slightly arched. Wide snout, not pointed. This head is a companion of the S.H. Tabby. The structure is less rough, "The tail is longer and the action is freer than in the Persian.".

In his latest work ยซOverview and description of domestic cat breedsยป (1954), Schwangart described in detail the German Longhair Cat, pointing out the existence of intermediate forms between the Persian and the German Longhair Cat that were in some of the colors, and the need to eliminate intermediates to reestablish the 2 races as different from each other. It is clear that Persians they had grown up together, perhaps due to the difficulties of maintaining the races in times of war, perhaps to improve the traits of one or another breed or perhaps due to ignorance that they had originally been separate breeds.

Drew up the breed standard, though by then he might feel it was a losing battle due to the growing popularity of the Persian cat. In the German longhaired solid color, amber / yellow was the preferred eye color, except solid white cats, in which amber was allowed, blue or odd eyes. Deafness was a disqualifying offense in white cats, they were to be examined with a whistle out of sight of the cat. He also mentioned the potential for degenerative problems, like deafness, related to "albinism" (blue-eyed white was confused with albinism), so some indication that the cat was not albino was desirable, like a dark membrane. Bicolor and tricolor cats should have more color than white. "Masked" cats were allowed to be less symmetrically marked than bicolor or tricolor cats.. This group included the โ€œblack and yellowโ€ and the โ€œSpanishโ€ tortoiseshell. (tortoiseshell and white). Tortoiseshells should ideally have large patches of color, but Schwangart admitted that this was weird. In partial colored cats, eye color should reflect the predominant coat color. Chinchilla eye colors (black tip), peach colors (golden?), smoked and silver were related to the color of their fur (that is to say, in parallel to shorthairs and Persians).

In 2008 a provisional standard of the German Longhair Cat in the World Cat Federation, based on the standards of 1929 and 1954. It is the only long-haired cat developed in German lands and is the long-haired "sister" of the European short-haired breed., to which it resembles in its general conformation.

It does not have the broad muzzle of the Maine Coon cat nor the straight nose line of the Norwegian Forest Cat .

The modern standard calls for a medium-sized cat with a long figure, rectangular, robust and flexible. It is distinguished from European Shorthair / Celtic Shorthair for having a deeper chest and a bushy tail of medium length that is reduced to a round tip. The sturdy legs are short to medium long with large, firm legs.. The head is rounded, but it is longer than it is wide with a moderately long and sloping nose with a slight stop (a pronounced stop is a foul). Strong chin and cheeks, the latter suggest the Nordic breed of the European wildcat (F. silvestris silvestris). The ears are small to medium size, straight and broad at the base with a rounded tip. The eyes are round to oval, large and slightly diagonal; color is related to coat color / pattern (or with the predominant color in partially colored cats).

The coat is medium long on the shoulders and shorter on the head. It is longer in the flanks, the back and the belly, and it is particularly long on the gola, hind legs and tail. But, the coat is easy to maintain, shiny and not as woolly as that of the Persian. All colors are accepted, except for chocolate, the cinnamon and its diluted, the lilac and the tawny (both in solids and in drawings). Otherwise, colors / patterns include auto / solid, the bicolor, the tortoiseshell, the turtle and the white, the masked", el tipped, the cream, red, the smoked, shading, the silver and the mackerel and the classic tabby. Personality is human-oriented.

History

The Chantilly He is originally from the United States. His story began when, in 1967, a breeder from New York, Jennie Robinson, came across some pretty unusual items at a yard sale: two cats of an unknown breed whose owner had recently died. I buy them, motivated by the desire to save them from a worse fate.

The two animals had semi-long chocolate-colored hair and golden eyes.. They were very similar, which led Mrs. Robinson to assume that they had at least one parent in common. Estimated Thomas's age, the male, in a few 18 months and that of the female, Shirley, in a few 6 months. Neither of us was neutered.

In May of 1969, Thomas and Shirley had their first litter of 6 kittens. Like his parents, the kittens were all smooth, with a medium chocolate-colored coat and pink pads on the legs.

Jennie Robinson realized that these cats did not belong to any recognized breed.. They seemed beautiful and decided to start a breeding program. He also promoted them, showing Thomas and some of the kittens at various cat shows in the New York area in the early years 70.

In 1970, the American Cat Association (ACA) agreed to register Thomas, Shirley and her offspring as Sable Foreign Longhair.

The first litter was followed by many more, so that in just 7 years the Neotype kennel (Jennie Robinson's name for her kennel) saw the birth of some 60 kittens. Other Connecticut and Long Island breeders became interested in the new breed and bought some of the kittens, which in turn were exhibited in exhibitions.

Many professionals were convinced that the Sable Foreign Longhair He was a descendant of the Burmese cat. More concretely, they thought it was just the long-haired version. This confusion continued for many years and was later expanded.

In fact, in the mid 70, Jennie Robinson gave up breeding him Sable Foreign Longhair. He sold the cats he still owned to a Florida breeder, Sigyn Lun, which in turn started a breeding program. This breeder basically bred burmese cats, which contributed to the belief that the Sable Foreign Longhair was a Long Haired Burmese cat.

But, in some of the exhibitions in which these cats were shown, the judges commented that the name was too vague to designate a breed. Sigyn Lun decided to call them Tiffanie in reference to the eponymous theater in Los Angeles, a symbol of luxury and glamor for her. In fact, considered the cat to be the very embodiment of elegance and grace.

But, how the cat had become too weird, the ACA stopped accepting your registration.

In 1979, the International Cat Association (TICA) recognized the Burmese and formed a group with him Burmese and the Tiffanie, which was recognized at the same time. In other words, even a major international feline organization was convinced that the second was simply a long-haired equivalent of the first.

At the beginning of the Decade of 1980, Sygin Lun decided to stop raising the cat Tiffanie, that was on the verge of extinction. But a Canadian breeder probably saved the breed…

A salvation from Canada

Chantilly-Tiffany cat

The second life of the Chantilly-Tiffany Cat started in canada, more specifically in the province of Alberta, When in 1973 a chocolate-colored cat with golden eyes came to give birth on a farm. She gave birth to a litter of kittens, all of them chocolate-colored and similar to Tiffanie. The farm was owned by a breeder, Tracy Oraas, who decided to start raising cats after falling in love with their grace and beauty.

Before embarking on this new project, and noting the similarities with the Burmese cats, tried to establish if there was any link, and got in touch with Jennie Robinson and Sygin Lun. Based on your research and the information provided to you, concluded that Tiffanie They had no relationship with the Burmese cats.

He teamed up with a Siamese breeder friend, Jan de Regt, to create a breeding program. They decided to cross the Tiffanie with the Angora cat, the Havana Brown cat Brown, the Somali cat and the Nebelung cat. In effect, given the small population of the breed, These marriages made it possible to expand the gene pool and, Therefore, develop it in the best conditions, reducing the risks of inbreeding. They also offered the possibility of diversifying the range of coat colors, since thanks to them the cinnamon colors were added, leonado, lilac and blue.

Since the beginning of the years 80, other breeders joined the program. The exchanges between all these enthusiasts allowed the Chantilly progress slowly but surely in Canada.

But, just when the information about the Chantilly it was finally clearing up, since it was no longer confused with the Burmese, in 1992 Canadian breeders were asked to choose another name. The name "Tiffanie" was used in Great Britain to refer to a new breed in development.. Although the spelling was not exactly the same, it was confusing. Tracy Oraas decided to change the name of Tiffanie for that of Chantilly to keep the idea of รขโ‚ฌโ€นรขโ‚ฌโ€นelegance and refinement, while remembering the idea of รขโ‚ฌโ€นรขโ‚ฌโ€นa floaty coat.

The cat regained importance in the United States in 2001, when an Illinois foodie, Anne Davenport-Parini, founded the Amorino kennel. Hershey Nugget, a handsome chocolate-colored male, he was the father of the first generation of kittens. Also in this case several matings with representatives of other races were necessary.. It's about him brown havana (for its beautiful chocolate color), The somali (for his thicker fur in his pants, the gola and the tail), the Abyssinian (origin of the somali) and, finally, the Nebelung (by the length and texture of its fur).

In 2012, the hatchery was completely destroyed by a fire. One of the surviving cats, Frosty, was purchased by a Norwegian Nebelung breeder, Norma Hubenbecker. Norma Hubenbecker tried to start a breeding program for the Chantilly, but his attempt was unsuccessful. Frosty only sired a puppy, called Acey. In 2015, Frosty died of cancer and the breeder castrated Acey, ending the experiment.

In fact, it seems that the Chantilly-Tiffany cat he wasn't exactly born under a lucky star: from its inception to today, its history has been full of pitfalls and confusion, which has inevitably greatly limited its growth.

Today, there are less than twenty breeders (concentrated in Canada and the United States) who are dedicated to the breed and give all their energy to try to develop and perpetuate it.

Chantilly recognition

The Chantilly-Tiffany Cat has only existed for a few 50 years, and has struggled to gain recognition compared to other recent cat breeds that have quickly achieved success.

Since 1967, the beginning of its history, his path has been complicated and has been strewn with pitfalls, which obviously did not facilitate its recognition by the different recalcitrant official bodies. In addition to the various twists, the latter also noted the successive name changes, which obviously didn't help things.

However, the International Cat Association (TICA) granted recognition in 1979, at the same time as Burmese: formed a group composed of these two races, considering that one was the long-haired version of the other. But, realizing that this was not really the case and that the population of Tiffanie didn't really take off, in 1992 backtracked on acknowledging the latter.

Two years later, in 1994, TICA accepted it again, this time as a different race and with the name of Chantilly… before changing my mind shortly after.

In the year 2000, another change: the organization recognized him Chantilly as an experimental breed. This allowed their representatives to appear in the halls organized under the auspices of the organization., without entering competition. A few years later, the breed suffered another setback: while admission as an experimental breed is usually the prelude to full recognition, the association simply stopped recognizing the Chantilly, due to lack of enough specimens.

The Canadian Cat Association (CCA) accepted the Chantilly as an experimental breed in 1992, and granted him full recognition in 1996. But, observing that its population did not increase -and even decreased-, downgraded her to the rank of experimental breed in 2011.

Either internationally or nationally, other important feline organizations such as the Fรฉdรฉration Internationale Fรฉline (FIFรฉ), the American Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA), the British Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) or the Livre Officiel des Origines Fรฉlines (LOOF) they don't recognize the Chantilly.

Like this, more than half a century after the creation of this breed, almost everything remains to be done in terms of recognition.

Physical characteristics

The Chantilly-Tiffany cat It is of medium size and semi-linear type.

  • Its body it is rectangular in shape with a flat back and a rounded rump. His moderate musculature is based on a medium bone structure.
  • The tail is proportional to the length of the body. Tapers from base to tip and has a coat of feathers.
  • The legs they are of equal length in front and behind. They end in oval feet.
  • The head it is medium in size and harmonious in outline, resting on a rather short and thick neck. The skull is rounded and the forehead a little flattened. The profile shows a slight stop just below the eyes.
  • The ears they are widely spaced and medium in size, slightly angled outwards and forwards. Wide at the base, tapers to a rounded tip. The breed standard states that it is desirable that they have hair on the inside.
  • The eyes they are also widely separated and oval in shape. Its color ranges from dark yellow, gold and amber. In any case, it is preferable that it is as intense as possible, and a green ring is accepted around the pupil. The upper lash line is straight, while the lower one is rounded.
  • The cheeks they are tall and prominent.
  • The nose it is moderately long and ends in a broad muzzle, short and square. Whisker pads are flat. The complexion is dominated by wide jaws and a slightly prominent chin..
  • This cat has no undercoat, but it is distinguished by its semi-long coat, silky, light and very soft. This is what gives this animal its elegance, since its coat is reminiscent of an airy and vaporous whipped cream.

Should have 5 cm length, but it can be a bit longer as long as the texture remains light and silky. In any case, up to two years of age this cat does not have its final coat. The fur appears first on the tail and then on the rest of the body. The male has a fuller ruff and a heavier coat than the female.. Regardless of gender, the hair on the hind legs is similar to that of the feathers, forming a small petticoat on the legs.

Originally, the Chantilly-Tiffany cat appeared with a chocolate brown fur, which is still the most popular today. But, crosses with the Angora Cat, the Oriental, the havana, the Nebelung and the Somali have expanded the range of colors. There's also Chantilly black, blue, cinnamon, tawny and lilac. The coat patterns are also more varied: may be agouti, stained or tabby.

In all cases, the color should be bright and deep. But, lighter shades of brindle on throat and muzzle are acceptable.

Last, there is true sexual dimorphism in this breed, since the male is bigger and heavier than the female.

    Character and skills

The Chantilly-Tiffany cat it is an ideal cat for a family, since its balanced character makes it adorable and easy to live with.

He is especially attached to the person he considers his teacher. Devoted and faithful, follows her everywhere and scrutinizes her every move at all times. It can also be perfectly placid, for example, snuggling into or against your lap for hours, or inviting himself to her bed. He likes to be caressed and gives all the attention he receives, But it's clearly not for someone who doesn't want a "sticky" companion..

Although they have a very strong relationship with their owner, this cat has a broader love for all humans in the home, and you need your company to be happy. This makes it an excellent companion for the whole family., since it is the type of cat that establishes a good relationship with each member of the family. He will be happy to play with them or to seek pampering.

Playing is also a favorite activity, making it an excellent entertainment companion for children. You just have to make sure children treat you with respect, like any other cat. In any case, for the good of both parties, a young child should never be left alone with a cat without adult supervision, regardless of race.

Very comfortable in your family environment, the Chantilly-Tiffany cat It, on the other hand, much more reserved with strangers. Without being fearful, prefers to stay away when strangers enter its domain. A tree for cats, essential for every small cat, it is an ideal place to take refuge on those occasions.

The fact that this cat loves the company of its humans goes hand in hand with the fact that it does not like to be alone.. Obviously, not recommended for owners who are away for long periods of time. In fact, if left alone for hours, quickly becomes anxious and melancholic. Leaving him toys cannot replace the presence of the people who usually surround him and allow him to flourish..

On the other hand, having him share his home with a small companion is an interesting option. In fact, tends to live easily with another cat, delighted as he is to share moments of play with him. Living under the same roof as a dog is usually not a problem, especially if it is a breed of dog that gets along well with cats. But, in either case, it is always preferable that the two of you join at a young age: then the other is considered a full member of the family from the beginning, and the relationship is much better for it. Otherwise, it is preferable to establish coexistence gradually, to minimize the risk of problems.

The Chantilly-Tiffany cat it can also live in the same house as birds or small rodents. They are quiet, peaceful and not aggressive. But, some caution must be exercised when the animal is outside: should be kept in a separate room or cage.

It also, Even if I'm not the hyperactive type, this cat is very playful and needs his little crazy moments. Providing a variety of interactive toys is a great way to satisfy their curiosity and develop their skills.. But, this does not mean that you do not have to play with your cat: he likes very much to interact with the people around him in this way.

As long as your need for entertainment is met and you have enough space to play, the Chantilly-Tiffany cat you can live both in a flat and in a house with a garden. On this last case, It is highly recommended to install a cat flap so that you can come and go as you please.

In any case, like any cat, must have an easily accessible scratching post. In effect, scratching is a compelling need that you cannot give up; without this accessory, would have no choice but to resort to furniture or curtains, for example.

Last, the Chantilly is known to be a very talkative cat. As he follows his master throughout the day and shares his activities, does not hesitate to tell you his life and give his opinion on everything. His way of communicating is, However, nice, since its meow is not very loud and is comparable to a screech.

    Health

Because the breed's population has always been very small, little is known about the health of Chantilly-Tiffany cat. But, appears to be in robust health.

It also, is able to adapt to all climates and, Therefore, to live in almost all latitudes. It is only important to ensure that you always have access to fresh water and a shady area during hot periods., and to a sheltered and warm place when the temperature is very low.

But, it is known to have a delicate digestion and is especially sensitive to cellulose, that decomposes with difficulty during assimilation and digests poorly. So, It is important not to hesitate to consult a veterinarian or a nutritionist to identify the most suitable food and, in any case, to avoid, for example, those based on corn, containing a large amount of cellulose.

It is also important that you always receive the same food, even if it is left in a cattery when its owners are away. In any case, even more than with other breeds, a change in the cat's diet (for example, for health reasons) requires a very gradual transition to the new food, so that the digestive system can gradually get used to the new food.

On the other hand, the Chantilly-Tiffany cat have an unfortunate tendency to be overweight or even obese, especially if you live indoors and, Therefore, are less likely to exercise. This problem should not be taken lightly, as excess weight can both aggravate existing diseases and cause new ones.

Ears of the Chantilly they also require special attention. In fact, the presence of hair makes it less able to clean itself in this area. Thus, wax and dirt can build up and lead to ear infections (for example, otitis).

As in the case of any race, turning to a serious breeder is the best way to adopt a healthy and well-endowed kitten. In effect, a professional worthy of the name spares no effort to socialize the little ones from a very young age and make them grow up in an ideal environment. In any case, at the time of sale, must be able to present a certificate of good health issued by a veterinarian, as well as the list of vaccines applied to the animal, registered in the health or vaccination card of this.

Once the adoption is done, it is the responsibility of the new owner to take care of the health of his little companion while he is alive. Taking the cat to the vet at least once a year is one of the golden rules to keep it healthy. In fact, this not only allows the administration of the necessary booster vaccines, but also a complete health check of the animal, which sometimes makes it possible to detect a possible problem and treat it in the best conditions. It also, do not hesitate to increase the frequency as the cat grows.

Continuing with the theme of prevention, the owner must ensure that his partner's antiparasitic treatments are regularly renewed, so that you are continuously protected. This applies even to cats that do not have access to the outdoors.: even if the risk is lower, are still exposed to certain parasites.

    Grooming

The Chantilly-Tiffany cat has no undercoat and sheds very little. On the other hand, their fluffy, silky fur tangles easily. Brushing every other day not only removes dead hair, it also avoids tangles, allowing the dog to maintain its appearance. During their shedding periods, in autumn and spring, it is even preferable to brush daily.

It is also essential to check your ears once a week. This is because the tufts of hair at the entrance of the ears make it difficult to clean the dog and, Therefore, facilitate the accumulation of earwax and dirt. If cleaned with a damp cloth, impurities that may become infected will be removed.

This weekly grooming session should be used to check the eyes. If they are dirty, wiping the corners of the eyes with a damp cloth is necessary to remove dirt and prevent infection.

The maintenance of a cat's teeth is also very important, whatever the race. This is because it helps prevent plaque build-up., which can cause more or less serious diseases when it becomes tartar. So, you should brush your pet's teeth at least once a week, but the ideal is to do it daily. In any case, it is essential to use a toothpaste specially designed for felines

Whether your cat lives exclusively indoors or has access to the outdoors, it is also essential to inspect your nails once a month. If the natural wear and tear is not enough and they become too long, must be trimmed manually. This will prevent them from getting in the way or even breaking and / or injuring the dog. But, It should be noted that caring for your cat's nails does not mean you don't have to provide a scratching post. If you don't, You shouldn't be surprised if your cat falls on furniture or curtains..

coat care, the ears, the eyes, the teeth and claws of his Chantilly-Tiffany cat does not require any special skills. But, it is a good idea to learn from a cat groomer or vet the first time, so you can learn the right techniques and then do it yourself. In this way, better results are achieved and the risk of injuring or even traumatizing the animal is reduced..

As long as the owner does it correctly and does not hesitate to add caresses, the grooming sessions of the Chantilly-Tiffany cat will become privileged moments between the two protagonists. In fact, by liking the proximity of its owner, delighted that they pay attention to him and even more that they caress him, you probably appreciate it. It is common for him to let you know with sweet little meows.

    Food

Like any cat, the Chantilly-Tiffany cat you need a diet that matches your nutritional needs, both qualitatively and quantitatively. As such, must suit your age, your level of physical activity and your health status.

In any case, the tendency to be overweight - and even obese- forces you to carefully define your daily food intake. It also, unlike most of his peers, has difficulty regulating himself, so it is better to avoid giving free access to food, since it is likely that he will binge and eat the entire ration for the day in a few minutes. Fixed meal times are a much better solution.

Industrial cat foods are suitable, as long as they are of good quality. But, the choice should not be made at random, since your cat has a delicate digestion. In particular, avoid corn-based products, since they contain a lot of cellulose, which is difficult for the cat's body to digest. Ideally, seek the help of a veterinarian or feline nutrition specialist to identify the most appropriate.

In any case, once you have found a suitable product, it is best to avoid changing it, unless, Of course, that your health justifies it. This is true of any cat, but even more so for cats whose digestive system has a harder time adjusting to a change in diet.

Unless carefully selected, human food is not made for cats: is unlikely to meet your nutritional needs and, on the other hand, it can be a source of deficiencies or excesses. It also, in the case of Chantilly-Tiffany cat, there is also the problem of its digestion capacity. Like this, give small pieces during the meal, table scraps at the end of the table or letting him rummage through the trash is not a gift to keep him healthy. Some foods that are popular with humans are even toxic to cats.

Your propensity for obesity also means you have to control your weight by weighing it every month. If successive weighings indicate that your cat is getting fat, it is important to take him to the vet. Only a healthcare professional can reliably diagnose the cause of the problem, which may be a feeding problem, but also a disease or a reaction to medication.

Last, like any cat, the Chantilly-Tiffany cat you must have fresh water at all times.

    History

The history of Ojos Azules cat started on 1984 in New Mexico ((UNITED STATES)UU.), when a family discovered a colony of stray cats, some of whose members had intense blue eyes. Their attention focused on a tortoiseshell cat that they took in and called Cornflower.

She was bred with other unrelated cats and gave birth to kittens, some with the same eyes. More intense than the Siamese cat, this blue color is not linked to the color of the cat's fur, and the gene responsible for it does not cause strabismus or deafness, unlike other blue-eyed cats.

In fact, regardless of race, it is the absence of melanin in the iris that makes the cat's eye blue. But, the cause of this absence is not the same; in the case of Ojos Azules, it is a hitherto unknown gene that is in the origin.

It was the discovery of this new gene, that allowed to have cats with dark fur and blue eyes, without being affected by strabismus or deafness, which led to the International Cat Association (TICA) to recognize this breed in 1991 and to set a standard, although at that time it was still very rare. In fact, in 1992 they only registered 10 specimens.

But, Later research showed that the gene responsible for blue eyes was also responsible for a life-threatening cranial deformity. A subsequent investigation by the DRA. Solveig Pflueger, judge and president of the TICA Genetics Committee since its creation in 1979, confirmed the link. But, at the same time he discovered that the gene is Heterozygosity, so these dangerous cranial deformities can be avoided by crossing a blue-eyed individual with a standard-eyed individual. This led to prohibiting the breeding of two Ojos Azules cats together.

At the same time, a Ojos Azules in Australia, although no specimen had been imported there. This led breeders to believe that this mutation could occur spontaneously in the domestic cat population..

In France, the LOOF (Livre Officiel des Origines Francaises) established a standard for Blue Eyes in 2004.

But, contrary to what is usually observed, recognition of the breed by reference bodies did not lead to its expansion: the Ojos Azules still one of the rarest feline breeds in the world, and the number of breeders remains confidential. In fact, in 2019, both the TICA and the LOOF eliminated the Ojos Azules from the list of recognized breeds.

The main feature of the Ojos Azules cat It, as the name reflects, her magnificent deep blue eyes.

Otherwise, the standards describe a body rectangular with a fine and solid bone structure, well proportioned and flexible: it is about, because, of a semi-linear cat. The legs hind legs are slightly longer than front and legs, round or oval, they are rather small and delicate. The tail is of medium length and tapers to the tip.

The head it is triangular seen from the front, with prominent cheekbones and a slightly rounded forehead in profile, followed by a slight stop at the beginning of the nose. The ears medians are rounded, while the muzzle is rather square. The eyes they are almost round and as big as possible. Different colored eyes are tolerated, being one of them blue and the other green, gold or copper.

The fur it can be short or medium long and has a silky smooth texture. All colors and patterns are accepted, except for the White, to distinguish this breed from the usual white cats with blue eyes.

The gene responsible for blue eyes also usually gives white markings on the tips of the legs, ears and tail.

    Size and weight

    • Size: 30 cm.
    • Weight: Of 4 to 6 kg

    Varieties

By recognizing the Ojos Azules in 1991, the TICA (International Cat Association) distinguished between two different varieties in the first published standard: the Ojos Azules Shorthair and the Ojos Azules Longhair, having a medium length coat.

    Character and skills

The rarity of Ojos Azules cats makes it difficult - even dangerous- draw conclusions about their character. But, owners of this breed describe them as affectionate, loyal, smart and playful.

    Health

The population of the Ojos Azules cats it is not large enough to have reliable information on possible health problems specific to this breed.

But, in the early days of the breed, some individuals were affected by a cranial deformity that was sometimes fatal.

A study carried out later on the specific gene of this breed that is at the origin of the color of its eyes made it possible to establish that it was enough not to breed two individuals with blue eyes.: being the gene Heterozygosity, kittens born from the union between a Blue Eyes and another cat that does not have blue eyes are protected from this risk of cranial deformation. In fact, this risk has already been eliminated: current specimens no longer suffer from this life-threatening malformation.

The teeth, the eyes and ears should also be checked once a week to avoid any risk of infection.

Last, if the claws are too long because they do not wear out naturally, it is necessary to trim them from time to time.

    Food

The Ojos Azules can be commercially fed, either with kibble or cat food. Quality industrial products provide all the nutrients and vitamins necessary for good health.

    History

The Manx cat It has existed since the middle of the 18th century on the Isle of Man, situated between England and Ireland, but its exact origins are the subject of speculation. A legend says that it was the last animal to climb into Noah's Ark and that its tail was cut off when the door was closed.. Another legend claims that the invaders, Vikings or Irish depending on the version, they cut off the kittens' tails to use as good luck charms: to protect their young, mother cats would have cut off their tails with their teeth at birth. Last, another wild theory is that it is the result of a cross between a cat and a rabbit, but it has been scientifically proven that it has no basis.

In fact, the most likely explanation is that it is a genetic mutation that appeared spontaneously among the island's feline population and spread rapidly thanks to its dominance (it is enough that one of the two parents is a carrier of the corresponding gene, and therefore have this characteristic, so that some of the kittens are in the same case).

    Manx cat

The presence of cats on the Isle of Man is also the subject of speculation. One of the theories is that the Vikings took them to the 9th century, another that the English sailors took on their frequent voyages from the 13th century and another that arrived with the survivors of the sinking of a Spanish galleon in 1588. All these explanations may have some basis of truth, but one thing is true: the first representatives of the feline species that appeared on the island had a full tail.

What is also true is that the fact that the Isle of Man was a port with some international traffic in a context of increasing trade facilitated the spread of manna around the world during the 19th century., especially in the UK (since the beginning of the century) and then in the United States. This is how the Manx became one of the breeds exhibited in the first cat shows in history, which were held in Great Britain from 1871. In 1903 a breed standard was developed and the famous Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) recognized the breed at its founding in 1906. The same happened with the creation of the Fรฉdรฉration Internationale Fรฉline (FIFรฉ) in 1949, and then with the TICA (The International Cat Association) in 1979.

Authentic national symbol of its island of origin, where it appears mostly in coins, seals, postcards and badges, manx is still unpopular outside, despite its long history and international recognition. In United States, CFA statistics place the Manx cat between the posts 25 and 30 (of about 45) in the ranking of breeds according to the number of annual registrations. In Great Britain, there has even been a certain disaffection for this cat since 2006: while in 1997 and 2006 about forty individuals were registered per year, now their number can be counted on the fingers of one hand, although 2018 marked a jump, with 22 registered births. It remains to be seen if this holds up over time.… In France, In addition, it is a rare breed of cat, since they only registered 56 specimens in the Official Book of Feline Origins (LOOF) between 2003 and 2019. Their number is even zero in some years.

    Physical characteristics

The Manx has a short morphology / Cobby. Its body it is compact and curvilinear, but well muscled and with good bones. The legs foreheads are short and widely spaced, while the rear ones are much longer.

Like the rest of the body, the head of the Manx cat she is also plump, seated on a neck wide and short. The ears are size medium, wide at the base and rounded at the tip. The eyes they are large and round and can be of various colors: yellow, copper, Hazelnut, green or even blue.

The no tail is the most distinctive feature of this cat. Unlike in the Bobtails, they have a short tail, the Manx has no tail at all (variety rumpy), or just a bone growth (variety riser) consisting of one to three sacral vertebrae, that is to say, at hip level. The standard of the Official Book of Feline Origins (LOOF) also recognizes specimens with a short tail formed by between 1 and 3 caudal vertebrae, that is to say, located beyond the hips and that, Therefore, already forms a queue (variety "stumpyยซ), but neither the Cat Fancier’s Association (CFA) neither him Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) accept them. There's also Manx cats that have a tail as long as that of another breed (variety "longyยซ); they are not recognized as Manxs by no rule, but they remain in the breeding program, since they can still give birth to tailless individuals (ยซrumpyยป o ยซriserยซ).

The fur consists of a dense, cottony undercoat and a harder, glossier topcoat. The undercoat may be less dense in summer, and white or light-colored specimens may have a softer top coat. Your top coat can be short or long. But, while some organizations consider that the Manx longhair it is a mere variety, other (as the Fรฉdรฉration Internationale Fรฉline or The International Cat Association) consider it a breed in its own right, other than Manx and named Cymric cat.

All are accepted coat colors, except for those resulting from hybridization: chocolate or lavender. Similarly, all patterns are possible except the Himalaya.

Last, the sexual dimorphism it is well marked, the female being smaller than the male.

    Varieties of the โ€œManx Catโ€

The Manx longhair, also known as Cymric cat, is considered by feline associations well as a simple variety of the Manx (this is the position taken by the British Governing Council of the Cat Fancy and American Cat Fanciers’ Association), fine as a breed in its own right (this is the case, for example, of the Fรฉdรฉration Internationale Fรฉline and The International Cat Association).

It also, not all individuals, whether they are short or long hair, completely lack a tail (variety rumpy) or have a small bump made up of one to three sacral vertebrae (variety riser). There are also short-tailed individuals (stumpys) with one to three vertebrae in the tail, and long-tailed individuals.

The latter are not considered Manx, but nevertheless they are used in the breeding program, since they can give birth to healthy litters with kittens rumpy or riser. This is lucky, since the offspring of two parents rumpy or riser it's troublesome, since some of their offspring are victims of the manx syndrome or even die before being born.

    Character and skills

The Manx cat he is affectionate with his whole family, but he usually has a favorite person who he follows around the house and with whom he likes to rest. They are perfectly capable of spending the day alone when their owners are away., but they prefer the company of their humans to solitude: they are not a suitable cat breed for someone who is absent often.

Its playful nature makes it a breed of cat suitable for children, provided they have learned to behave with and respect animals. He also gets along well with other cats and with dogs accustomed to cats, as long as they get to know each other little by little. On the other hand, how he has preserved his hunting instincts, the little rodents, birds or fish would run a great risk of a quick and tragic end if they had to cohabit with a Manx.

Rather suspicious in character, is reserved with strangers and is even an excellent guardian cat -or at least alert-, who does not stop warning his master when a newcomer approaches. If you see that the owner remains calm, accept the situation and observe it.

Clever and skillful, the Manx cat It is a good option for those who want to teach their cat tricks, as for example, to retrieve an object. They are also very good when walked on a leash. On the other hand, his intelligence can also turn against his master: It is very probable, for example, who understands how a doorknob works, so it is advisable to close the food cupboard.

This is especially true because, despite his fat and lack of a tail, that might be mistakenly thought to impair your sense of balance, the Manx is surprisingly agile and active. Its powerful hind legs make it an excellent jumper, and it is quite common to find it sitting on top of a cupboard. Having said that, it is also a breed of cat that adapts well to life in a flat, as long as I have enough opportunities to run and play.

From its island origins, the Manx cat retains a fascination for water, what can take you, for example, to observe a tap that is open for a long time or to play with the water in the bath. But, this does not go much further: does not like to get wet and, therefore, does not have the possibility to follow his master in the shower.

Last, this cat has a nice voice, who does not hesitate to share with others by having a conversation from time to time.

    Grooming "Manx cat"

The Manx it is an easy cat to care for: just brush it once a week to keep its coat healthy. But, this frequency should be increased during the annual spring and fall molts, when it is necessary to brush every 2 or 3 days to remove excess dead hair.

Weekly brushing of the cat's hair is an opportunity to ensure that its teeth are free of cavities and tartar., and that their eyes and ears are clean. They should be cleaned with a damp cloth.

Last, if they have become too long, you should cut your cat's nails with a nail clipper to prevent it from being hindered in its movements. But, this operation is not usually necessary, since a cat trims its nails regularly and keeps them in good condition and with the right length.

    Health and nutrition

The Manx cat is a carrier of a gene responsible for the disappearance of its tail, what has consequences on your health. This gene is dominant (it is not necessary for both parents to have this anatomical feature for their kittens to have it), but it is not expressed in the same way in all cats, so some do not have a tail, while others have a partial tail.

A fetus that receives two mutated genes has serious developmental problems and usually dies in the womb.. Those with only one mutated gene manage to develop, either no tail or with a short tail; In the latter case they are called variety ยซstumpyยซ. But, between 20% and the 30% of them are affected by what is commonly called "Manx syndrome.".

Affects the spine and various internal organs, like bladder, intestines or stomach. These deformities are fatal in the long run, so affected kittens are usually euthanized. Those who are not usually die after 3 or 4 years, with a peak of 5 years. The syndrome is detectable from 4-6 months old watching the kitten, so a responsible Manx breeder will not put kittens up for adoption before this age.

Individuals who are saved tend to live long, most exceed 15 years of age and some reach 20. Yes indeed, are more likely to suffer from certain diseases:

    • The tail arthritis, which mainly affects purebred individuals and can be very painful for the animal;
    • The corneal dystrophy, a genetic eye disease that begins around the 4 months old and causes vision problems that can lead to blindness.

    Food

The Manx is not picky about food and can be fed commercially available industrial cat food without any problem. It must be ensured that the quality of the feed is sufficient to provide the necessary essential nutrients, depending on the age and activity level of the cat.

This cat is a greedy guy and has a healthy appetite. So, not necessarily capable of self-regulation, so it is best to avoid leaving food at your disposal all the time: its owner must, on the other hand, make sure to provide you with daily rations tailored to your needs, and ensure that you are not overweight. If this is the case, a veterinarian should be consulted to establish an appropriate feeding program.

    History

The cat American Ringtail originated a few years ago, When in 1998 a male stray cat was rescued in Fremont, California. When the cat grew up, it was found that he tended to keep his tail in a hunched position on his back. There was no deformity or physical defects in the animal, the cat did not seem to have any kind of discomfort while holding its tail in that particular way.

Soon, other cats in the locality were observed with a similar "ring" on their tail. After the genetic consultation, the final decision was made to develop these cats as the only formal breed. The original ring-tailed male was crossed with a short-haired female cat. Since then, several litters have been born with the traits shown by the "ring-tailed cat". Originally called ยซRingtail Sing-a-lingยป These felines were called American Ringtail and they are currently on the road towards the full recognition of the bodies of registration of the feline breeds.

    Physical characteristics

A relatively large size, the RingTail it is a long and muscular animal. Both sexes can reach a weight of 5 to 7 Kg. in adulthood. have a back long and strong. The famous ring tail is due to two different genes that produce the โ€˜uprightโ€™ appearance’ and 'curved’ the tail. It is seen in certain wild cats and domestic, and even in purebred dogs. They are not associated with any health problem. Its own tail is muscular and broad at the base, well-developed bones are not fused. Cats have tails ring position when it is calm. It serves not only to balance the cats in movement, but also to slow down during a Chase at high speed.

    Character and skills

The American Ringtail he is very kind and loving by nature. They interact well with children and other family members, They even developed a strong attachment with one person in particular, however they are a bit shy in the presence of strangers.

curious by nature, explore everything what they see in their surroundings and are particularly fascinated by water sources, perhaps a relic of his wild days when he used to quench his thirst by drinking from the backwaters in the wild.

Another ยซwildยป attribute, It is their habit of its food storage, hiding in different places of the House for food at a later time. For its unique design and beauty, these fascinating safe cats win the attention and fame to prosper as a distinct breed, widely recognized for years to come.

    Health

Although their ringed tail does not cause any specific health problems, the American Ringtail you may experience some problems as you age.

    Grooming

Grooming your cat is a great way to spend time alone with him.. The American Ringtail usually has a short to medium coat length. Their coat is usually easy to maintain and tends to stay clean..

Brush your cat about twice a week to remove any stains or tangles, or just spend some time bonding with him and develop your relationship. They don't shed much, but brushing helps keep their coat soft and shiny.

What is the price of a "American Ringtail"?

The American Ringtail can be challenging to find, as they are still thought to be a rare breed. But, if you can find a breeder of these kittens, you can expect to pay between 500 and 1.000 $. They are currently only recognized by the International Cat Association (TICA), but with the status of โ€œRegistration Onlyโ€.

    History

The Sphynx it is a singular cat, that does not stop turning those who cross it. In fact, His physical appearance, with her bare and wrinkled skin, does not leave anyone indifferent.

But, only mentioned for a few decades, although the existence of naked cat breeds is not new.

In ancient egypt, hairless cats already attracted attention, and only pharaohs could have them. More recently, wall engravings from Aztec times show that they raised cats very similar to those of the Sphynx current.

In 1830, Swiss naturalist and physician J.R. Rengger described these cats in his book on the mammals of Paraguay (Naturgeschichte der Sรคugethiere von Paraguay).

In 1903, hairless cats were mentioned in the book The Book of the Cat, written by Frances Ann Simpson, a cat historian. He mentioned two nude specimens named Dick and Nellie who lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Pueblo Indians gifted them to an American cat lover, F.J. Shinick. They told him that they were the last two descendants of the cats bred by the Aztecs.

At a cat show held in Paris in 1930, a male and a female aroused great curiosity. The photos of them show that they look a lot like the Sphynx. Given the rarity of these individuals and the fact that they came from the same neighborhood in Paris, they were assumed to have the same father, which in turn should be hairless. But, the two owners refused to attempt mating.

In the following years, similar individuals were reported in Morocco, Australia and the United States.

The phenomenon was repeated in Toronto (Canada) in 1966: a pair of short-haired domestic cats gave birth to a litter in which one of the males, called Prune, I had no hair. This did not leave Ridyah and Yania Bawa indifferent, breeders by profession, who decided to start breeding naked cats. They acquired Prune and Elizabeth, his mother, and they made them raise. They obtained a litter with a hairless individual. With the help of Keese and Rita Tenhove, they continued their work to develop the breed, who was called first Moonstone Cat and then Canadian Hairless, finally choosing the name of Sphynx cat.

But, the early days were chaotic, with medical problems caused by limited gene pool and inbreeding. As a result, some kittens died quickly from undiagnosed illnesses. In fact, the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) granted recognition of the breed on a provisional basis in 1970, before withdrawing it the following year precisely for these health problems.

In 1975, Milt y Ethelyn Pearson, Minnesota farmers ((UNITED STATES)UU.), they found a hairless kitten in one of their litters, even though both of his parents did not have this specificity. They called it Epidermis. The following year they had more hairless kittens, one of whom they named Dermis. In 1981, Kim Muesk, from the Zโ€™Stardust hatchery in Oregon, bought the two cats from farmers to try to develop the breed.

At the same time, another Minnesota breeder, Georgiana Gattenby, he also used naked kittens from the Pearson farm to cross with the Cornish Rex and help develop the Sphynx cat.

At the end of the year 70, a dutch amateur, The doctor. Hugo Hernandez, got a male cat and a female, named Starsky and Johnny respectively. Both specimens were probably descendants of Prune. Raised them, but the litter resulting from their mating died.

At the same time, more specifically in 1978, Shirley Smith, a Siamese breeder from Toronto (Canada), he found three little hairless cats on the streets of his neighborhood. He took them in and called them Bambi, Paloma and Punkie. Castrated Bambi, but he sold the other two to Hugo Hernรกndez, who still owned Starsky and Johnny.

Hugo Hernรกndez tried several crosses, but none of them were successful. Castrated Starsky in 1981 and sold Paloma to a German breeder. Finding herself without a male Sphynx able to create, raised Punkie with a white Devon Rex. She gave birth to a litter of five kittens, two of which were hairless and named Q-Ra and Q-Ramses. In collaboration with the German breeder, a mating was arranged between Q-Ra and Paloma, that allowed the latter to give birth to a small Sphynx called Hathor.

The two men also arranged marriages between Q-Ramses and Paloma. In 1983, one of the resulting litters passed into the hands of Patrick Challain, a Parisian breeder, and the breed was introduced in France. One of the kittens in the litter, Chnoem, came to acquire notoriety as European champion of the breed.

In 1985, a couple of French breeders, Aline and Philippe Noรซl, two little Sphynx were brought from Holland, Mogwi y Gizmo. They had a litter from which came a little cat named Amenophis Clone. The latter was used by the Official Book of Feline Origins (LOOF) to set the standard Sphynx.

Beyond the fact that the breed faced many pitfalls before it was born, sometimes faced a certain suspicion, even open hostility. In effect, if some cat lovers were quickly fascinated by this particular looking cat, others, on the other hand, they had a much less enthusiastic attitude, arguing that the gene that gives bare skin can be considered as a genetic disease, and that, therefore, this particularity should not be encouraged at all, and even less to be recognized by official authorities.

Your point of view is questionable, because the hairless skin trait is due to a spontaneous genetic mutation that has existed since ancient times, no to a disease. But, despite his detractors, the breed managed to develop and be recognized, especially thanks to the crosses made with the American shorthair cat and the Devon Rex: they were a precious help to expand the genetic background of the breed and avoid inbreeding.

    Recognition of Sphynx

Although the Sphynx cat It is a fairly recent breed and its beginnings were somewhat chaotic, was quickly recognized by the various reference bodies, both international and national.

The International Cat Association (TICA) was in 1986 the first official body to take the step. The Fรฉdรฉration Internationale Fรฉline (FIFรฉ), that brings together the feline authorities of some forty countries, including Switzerland and Belgium, did the same in 2002. It was also that year when Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) definitely recognized the Sphynx, after a true false start in 1970, when he was granted provisional recognition, to withdraw it the following year.

In fact, most official organizations in the world have done the same, as the World Cat Federation (WCF), the British Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF), the Canadian Cat Association (CCA) or the Livre Officiel des Origines Fรฉlines (LOOF) in France.

The unique appearance of this cat has not prevented it from being widely recognized throughout the world, and its success is undeniable.

    Authorized crossings

In order to expand the still relatively small gene pool of the breed, and thus reduce the risk of health problems induced by inbreeding, Most organizations allow a Sphynx cat is raised with a representative of some other races.

The International Cat Association (TICA) allows crossings with :

In United States, the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) does the same, at least until 2023. In fact, starting at the 1 in January of 2024, Only kittens whose parents are both purebred can register with the organization. Sphynx.

In Great Britain, the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) add russian blue to the list. So, the Sphynx can cross with :

On the other hand, the Canadian Cat Association (CCA) it is much more restrictive, since it only allows crosses with the American shorthair cat.

The Livre Officiel des Origines Fรฉlines (LOOF) French is the strictest of all, since it does not allow any crossing of the Sphynx cat with other races. In short, is already applying the policy that the CFA will follow from 2024.

Popularity of "Sphynx cat (Canadian Sphynx)"

Maybe the Sphynx be a recent breed of cat, but it is already very popular in both Europe and North America.
in Canada, despite a hiatus in 2018, in the second half of the Decade of 2010 occurred around 200 annual registrations with the Canadian Cat Association (CCA), which places it on the podium as one of the most popular cat breeds in Canada.

The United States also contributed a lot to its development, so it is not surprising that it is also well established there. Throughout the decade of 2010, log statistics on Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) placed them between sixth and ninth in the popularity ranking.

In France, the number of annual registrations in the Livre Officiel des Origines Fรฉlines (LOOF) has increased almost continuously since the beginning of the century. While at the beginning of the decade of 2000 there were barely hundreds, at the end of it the 300. Things picked up speed in the following decade, to the point that the number of registrations per year exceeded 1.000 at the end of the Decade of 2010, which even allowed the Sphynx enter the Top 10 of the favorite feline breeds of the French.

In Switzerland, things are more mixed. Certainly, annual enrollment statistics Fรฉdรฉration Fรฉline Helvรฉtique (FFH) show a regular progression from the beginning of the years 2000 until 2015, as their number went from a handful to almost fifty, which allowed them to approach the doors of the Top 10. But, in the following years there was a sudden collapse, and the number of cats Sphynx registered in the organization each year was reduced to about 20.

In Great Britain, there was also a similar decline from 2013, although it was much less pronounced. Like this, while the inscriptions in the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) they were approaching 400 early in the decade 2010 (versus less than a hundred in 2006, for example), later they were reduced to 250, and even some 200 at the end of the decade. As a result, after reaching the position 13 in the ranking of the most popular breeds in the country (based on the number of annual registrations) in 2012, the Sphynx cat had been demoted to the position 17 in 2019.

    Sphynx
    Sphynx

    Physical characteristics

With her bare and wrinkled skin, its big ears and its long rat tail, the Sphynx cat is definitely a cat with an atypical appearance, and he rarely leaves those who come across him indifferent.

Its body It is medium in size and semicobby. Has well-developed musculature, that is very evident under her hairless skin. His chest is "barrel shaped": is wide and the abdomen is rounded, which gives the impression that you have eaten too much. In fact, this cat is heavier than most of its congeners, but this is mainly due to their muscle mass. The well-shaped hips and rump are proof of this..

The body ends in a tail long and flexible, slightly thick at the base, that looks like a rat. In some individuals, has a lock of hair on the tip: it is then said that they have a lion's tail.

The legs have fine bone structure and well-defined musculature. The hind legs are slightly arched. They all have oval feet with long, thin toes and clearly defined phalanges.. The pads are meatier than in other cat breeds. This gives the impression of walking gracefully on air cushions..

The head it is medium in size and triangular in shape, longer than wide. The skull and forehead are flat. The neck it is quite slim and arched, what gives to Sphynx a haughty look.

This is reinforced by the ears, that are totally oversized in relation to the head. Wide at the base and rounded at the tip, they are very open and have no hair inside.

The eyes they are very open, are lemon-shaped and have few or no eyelashes. all colors are accepted, and they give you in any case a penetrating and expressive look.

Profile, there is a concave curve from the forehead to the straight nose.

The cheekbones they are bulging and round.

The snout it celebrities, rounded and rather short. The pasterns, fleshy parts of the muzzle where whiskers normally grow, they are complete and round. But, the Sphynx he doesn't have mustaches. The chin is well defined and firm.

The skin of the Sphynx can be characterized by alopecia in the strict sense, all over the body. But, usually covered by a small, barely visible down. In both cases, is thicker than fur breeds, and quite comparable to the touch of the skin of a peach.

It also, kittens are born with very wrinkled fur. This softens a bit as they grow, but a Sphynx cat adult retains folds especially on the legs, neck and head. All colors and designs are accepted. But, black and white is the most common color. The pigmentation of the skin is what gives the breed its varied colors.

Last, this breed is not characterized by a sexual dimorphism very pronounced: the male and female are quite similar in size.

    Curious Sphynx cat. – Flickr
A physical characteristic due to an autosomal recessive gene

The Sphynx has completely bare skin or has a small amount of down. This alopecia is due to a spontaneous mutation of a gene, without human intervention.

This gene is autosomal, that is to say, can affect both men and women. It is also recessive in relation to the gene for short or long hair.: to have this morphological peculiarity, an individual must have inherited one copy of the mutated gene from each of their two parents. Otherwise, has hair.

More concretely, if both parents are carriers of the mutated gene and have fur at the same time (that is to say, are heterozygous in the gene that determines the presence or absence of fur), an average of 25% of their kittens have no hair.

If, on the other hand, one of the two parents is hairless (that is to say, is homozygous for the fur gene) and the other is a carrier of the gene but has hair (that is to say, is heterozygous), the 50% of the kittens have no hair.

Last, in the event that both ancestors are hairless (and, Therefore, homozygous for the fur gene), all their offspring are hairless.

But, as detailed by researchers from the University of Davis (California, (UNITED STATES)UU.) In an article titled "The naked truth: Sphynx and Devon Rex cat breed mutations in KRT71ยซ, published in 2010 in Mammalian Genome Magazine, the specificity of the hairless skin of the Sphynx It is produced by the same gene that gives Devon Rex her curly hair. But, unlike the allele associated with curly hair, the one corresponding to the absence of hair is dominant. So, breeding cats Sphynx with cats Devon Rex would produce hairless individuals and was identified as an interesting way to increase the cat population Sphynx and, at the same time, diversify the breed's gene pool. But, It turned out that a large proportion of the individuals born from these matings suffer from dental or nervous diseases.

This gradually led most organizations to ban the breeding of the Sphynx with the Devon Rex. So they decided Livre Officiel des Origines Fรฉlines (LOOF) French, the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) British and the Canadian Cat Association (CCA). The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) has done the same, but this new rule will only be applicable in 2023: starting at the 1 in January of 2024, will stop recognizing kittens born from such a mating. The International Cat Association (TICA) it is the last major institution that admits these crossings.

This is why he was called Don: Don refers to the city of Rostov-on-Don, near which he was born, While Sphynx refers to the fact that it resembles the latter. But, their origins and stories are completely different.

    Character and skills

The physical appearance of Sphynx cat can sometimes confuse, not to say discourage. But, his character makes him worth knowing.

He is especially affectionate and attached to his family, and even humans in general. In fact, loneliness weighs on him, for which he appreciates the company of another human in the absence of that of his relatives. So, can be easily attended by a third person in case of prolonged absence.

His attachment to his master makes him feel free to follow him everywhere., or even sleeping in his bed (preferably under the sheets, to be warm) if you are offered the opportunity. He also especially likes to lean on the shoulders, to scrutinize your surroundings while in contact with the person who matters most to you. In short, It is not recommended for a person who does not want a "sticky" animal or who is often absent during the day and leaves it alone.

Although he has a particular attachment to his human reference, he is very tender with all members of the family. He is very cuddly and will cuddle up on the couch with everyone else to keep you company and warm., not hesitating to take advantage of their human warmth by snuggling with them.

He also really likes tenderness and pampering, and it must be recognized that caressing a Sphynx cat it is a very pleasant experience. In fact, her skin is as smooth as a peach, and radiates a reassuring warmth. It is sometimes used in zootherapy to combat nervousness or anxiety.

Nor is he deprived of welcoming his little world at the door., how would a dog. Sometimes she even winks to show how happy she is to have her family back..

It usually delights children, whose company you enjoy. Playful, patient and non-aggressive, it is an excellent entertainment companion for them. But, like any other dog, should never be left alone with a young child, Unsupervised, because a misunderstanding or awkward gesture can happen quickly. The safety of both parties is at stake.

It also, his closeness to humans is not limited to his family members: he is also very sociable and kind to strangers who come into the house. Far from greeting them with suspicion, as do most of his peers, does not hesitate to go to meet him, for example, jumping on his lap.
In short, whether it comes from your family or from strangers in the house, loves to be the center of attention.

They are very friendly, not aggressive and quite willing to share their territory, so they will easily coexist with a companion or a dog, especially if that dog is of a cat-loving breed. Sharing your home with another animal is a great way to help you cope with your family's absence.: if you are also well disposed, they can become best friends, playing together from morning to night. As he does with his humans, does not hesitate to sleep curled up against his little companion, to benefit from its body heat. So that the coexistence goes well, Ideally, each of the two protagonists should be used to the presence of the other from a young age. Otherwise, a gradual introduction is essential so that no one rushes and everyone gradually gets used to the situation.

Nor is it a problem that a Sphynx live with a bird or a rodent. But, if the family is out, it is always better to ensure the safety of the animal by keeping it in a closed place, either in a cage or in a room that the cat does not have access to.

In addition to his interpersonal qualities, the Sphynx he is a smart cat, lively and curious. All of these qualities combine to make the Sphynx an excellent student for anyone who wants to teach their cat tricks, how to look for objects and come when called. It is also very good at learning things by itself, especially when it follows its owners and observes them. So, it's not surprising to see him open doors, wardrove, drawers and taps. It is also a good idea to stimulate their intellectual faculties with interactive toys., with whom he usually enjoys.

Usually, cats like to rise up to observe the world around them, and the Sphynx is no exception. His master's shoulders are one of his favorite observatories, but this does not mean that a cat tree should not also be installed in the home where it can perch and contemplate its surroundings.

Last, the Sphynx cat it is much more adaptable than most of its congeners. Quickly and easily adapts to a possible change in environment, either punctual (for example, during a trip) the permanent (in the event of a move with your cat). In a way, gives more importance to where you live than to the people you live with.

Grooming and caring for the "Sphynx cat (Canadian Sphynx)"

Those who think that a hairless cat is necessarily less demanding than one with hair will be in for a surprise.: It is not the case of Sphynx cat.

In particular, their skin should be moisturized daily with a mild oil or lotion specifically for felines. As he likes very much to be caressed and does not mind being manipulated, these cares soon become a pleasure for him.

It also, the lack of fur means that the sebum emitted by their skin is not absorbed by the hair, so your skin quickly becomes oily. Daily cleaning with a feline washcloth will help keep your cat clean and prevent oil build-up on the skin., so that it does not leave greasy marks on furniture or fabrics. At the same time, it is necessary to bathe your cat every week with a moisturizing shampoo specially designed for cats. You should also make sure to rinse your cat well afterwards.: shampoo left on your skin could lead to scratching and irritation.

You should also plan to apply sunscreen if you have access to the outdoors and the weather is good.: replaces melanin, the protective substance against ultraviolet rays that, unlike other races, your body does not produce. This is a precaution that should not be overlooked, since sunburn can cause severe burns or even skin cancer if repeated.

It also, as in the case of any cat, you need to check your ears every week. Cleaning them with a damp cloth will remove impurities and prevent infection. (otitis, etc.); This is all the more useful as the Sphynx it has no hair to protect them.

Weekly care should also include checking the condition of the eyes. If they are dirty, it is necessary to clean the corner of them with a damp cloth to avoid the accumulation of dirt that could become infected.

The maintenance of the teeth of the Sphynx is especially crucial to avoid the risk of periodontitis to whom he is predisposed. Brushing once a day is ideal for limiting the buildup of plaque that, when it turns to tartar, not only leads to bad breath but also to more or less serious diseases. It is essential to always use a toothpaste specially formulated for felines.

Last, it is important to periodically check that its claws do not get too long, as this could cause discomfort or even break or injure you. In fact, even for an individual who has access to the outside, natural wear and tear is not always enough. So, inspecting them once a month allows you to check what is happening and, if required, trim them manually. In any case, whether the cat can leave the house or not, providing you with a scratching post is essential: prevents you from satisfying your irresistible need to scratch furniture.

Whether it's skin care, the ears, the eyes, teeth or claws, the need for maintenance of a Sphynx cat is not, Therefore, negligible, although there is nothing complex in these manipulations. But, it is better to know the proper gestures to be efficient and avoid hurting or even injuring him. As such, nothing better than using the experience of a veterinarian or a professional groomer the first time, to learn from them how to proceed in the best possible way.

In any case, this cat readily accepts being handled and, Therefore, it is much less resistant than its congeners to maintenance sessions. Of course, This is even more true if the owner instills a dose of tenderness and takes care of getting him used to it from a young age.: then they have every chance of becoming sweet complicity moments.

    Indoor or outdoor cat?

By being active and playful, the Sphynx cat need space. But, a garden is not necessarily essential: can be perfectly happy on a floor with enough room for her to run. In any case, is a cat made to live indoors, both because of his closeness to the family and because of his lack of hair, which makes it sensitive to extreme temperatures, either hot or cold. If you live in a house with a garden, the installation of a cat flap is essential so that you can come and go as you please, in particular to take shelter when you get too cold or too hot. Some owners even avoid letting it out unsupervised, since its high price makes it a target for malicious people.

How much activity does he need? "Sphynx cat (Canadian Sphynx)"?

The Sphynx Canadian is an extremely intelligent animal that quickly sees challenging toys. She loves that you spend a lot of time with her and demands daily playtime. He gladly accepts smart toys and also likes to chase toy mice or balls. Of course, like any other cat, he likes to rest. If possible, provide him with a large cat tree where he can play and sleep. A sunny and warm windowsill would also be ideal, where the cat can doze comfortably and warm up.

    Health and nutrition

The Sphynx cat is generally in good health.

Although this is partially offset by a thicker layer of fat under the skin than in most other breeds., its lack of fur makes it more sensitive to cold. If you have access to the outside, you must have access at all times to a warm corner where you can come to warm up as soon as you feel the need.

This morphological peculiarity does not prevent it from tolerating heat well. But, does not produce melanin, the molecule that protects from ultraviolet rays. Thus, the risk of sunburn is especially high in this breed. Thus, if they have access to the outside, it is essential to apply a sun cream specially designed for cats, even when the weather is cloudy. It is important to be especially attentive, as repeated burns can lead to skin cancer.

It also, like any race, the Sphynx are prone to certain health problems. In your case, is about:

    • The Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is characterized by thickening of the heart muscle and can lead to breathing difficulties, fatigue and intolerance to exertion. It is caused by a genetic mutation that can be detected by a DNA test, but this does not indicate when the symptoms will appear;
    • hereditary myopathy, sometimes known as spasticity, an extremely rare muscle degeneration due to neuromuscular dysfunction, leading to generalized muscle weakness. It occurs in the first months of life and can develop rapidly or remain stable for a short or long period of time before deteriorating abruptly.. In any case, is incurable and leads to the death of the animal;
    • Cutaneous mastocytosis, a skin disease whose causes are still unknown. Results in skin lesions that require generally temporary treatment;
    • The periodontal disease, a gum disease caused by plaque buildup, that turns into tartar. It can cause serious illnesses like sepsis.

Last, lack of hair can lead to comedones (excessive accumulation of sebum in the pores of the skin), especially on the chin or tail. But, there are treatments for it, which can be periodic or permanent.

Go to a breeder Sphynx earnestly will maximize the chances of adopting a healthy and well-behaved kitten. In fact, is the guarantee that the animal has been well socialized and, in general, has spent the first weeks of life in optimal conditions. It also, a professional worthy of the name takes care of genetic testing the subjects he intends to breed, to verify that they are not carriers of a hereditary defect that can be transmitted to their descendants. If they do it, are excluded from the breeding program. So, must be able to present the results of tests performed to parents and, possibly, to the pups, a certificate of good health from a veterinarian, as well as the details of the vaccinations received by the animal, registered in your health or vaccination card.

From the moment the adoption is finalized, the owner is responsible for keeping the animal in good health. As such, should take their pet to a vet for a full check-up at least once a year, and even more regularly as the pet gets older. This is an opportunity for the professional to diagnose any problems and, if required, treat it in the best possible conditions. It also, You can take advantage of this appointment to repeat the necessary vaccinations at the same time. As in all visits to the vet, usually goes smoothly, since the Sphynx is known for being handled without complaint.

Last, always in the field of prevention, the owner must ensure that his partner's deworming treatments are renewed throughout the year, so you are never unprotected against parasite risks. Even an individual who lives inside is not immune.

    Food

Like any other cat, the Sphynx you need a diet that meets your nutritional needs, both in terms of quality and quantity. Must suit your age, activity level and health status.

In any case, is distinguished by its greater appetite than most of its congeners. This is not simply because he is gluttonous: her nudity causes her to maintain a body temperature between 40 and 41ยฐC at all times, which is about two degrees higher than most other cats. To maintain this temperature, need to burn more calories (especially in winter, if you have access to the outdoors), and therefore needs to eat more. To be clear about the amount of food you need each day, and thus avoid being underfed, do not hesitate to ask a veterinarian for advice.

In any case, industrial cat food is perfectly suitable for your cat, but the same cannot be said for human food. In fact, unless it has been carefully selected to fit your nutritional needs, chances are high that it will do you more harm than good. So it is best to avoid succumbing to his pleading gaze and never give him leftovers or let him rummage through the bins.. This is all the more true since some very popular foods among humans are toxic to cats..

Last, like all his classmates, the Sphynx cat must have fresh water available at all times.

For sale "Sphynx cat (Canadian Sphynx)"

Exceptional looking, the Sphynx Cat is also usually exceptionally priced, since it is one of the most expensive breeds of cats.

In effect, the price of a kitten Sphynx usually oscillates between 1000 and 2000 EUR.

whatever the country, the amount charged differs depending on the reputation of the kennel, the lineage from which the animal comes, but also and above all its intrinsic characteristics, especially on a physical level. Therefore, prices can vary greatly from one individual to another within the same litter..

The "Sphynx" as a hypoallergenic cat

One might think that a Sphynx cat it is especially suitable for allergy sufferers due to its lack of hair. But, this assumption is not entirely correct, since many people are allergic to cat dander or body secretions and not to hair. But, hairlessness can significantly reduce allergy risk. So, before acquiring a naked cat as hypoallergenic, I should test if it reacts or not.
