History

The Mandalay originated in the decade of 1980 in New Zealand.

A cream-colored female from the hatchery of American Burmese cat of Dorothy Horton and Pat Hogan, in the south of the country, crossed paths with a red shorthair cat. The kittens she gave birth were a beautiful deep red color with very shiny fur.

At the same time, in the north of the country, a female American Burmese from another breeder named Jan Parson crossed paths with a black cat. The kittens that were born were jet black with shiny fur.

The three breeders realized that the kittens they got from each other had very dark and deep colors that made them beautiful.. They were so fascinated that they decided to try to create a specific breeding program together..

They kept crossing American Burmese with brightly colored street cats, and they began to call the kittens obtained darker in color and totally solid, Mandalays, and raise them together. On the other hand, those that had a less intense color and whose external face (back, head, flanks and outer part of the legs) it was darker than the inside face (belly and inside of the legs) they kept calling each other burmese. So, a litter could contain both kittens Mandalay as burmese.

The breeding program accelerated when other breeders joined Jan Parson, Pat Hogan and Dorothy Horton. Dorothy Horton wrote the first rule of Mandalay. Since then, enthusiasts fought for the breed to be recognized by the New Zealand Cat Fancy (NZCF), the official feline organization of the country. His efforts were eventually successful in 1990. As a result, from that year, kittens with strong, solid color were recorded as Mandalays on the NZCF Pedigree Cat Register.

Breeders also tried to expand the color palette, which was initially limited to solid colors (black ebony, bronze blue, dark brown chocolate, cinnamon, leonado, red, cream, caramel and apricot). They also developed the brindle pattern. These advancements were later updated in the standard.

But, for many years, New Zealand was the only country that bred the Mandalay. Was not up 2013 when Australia joined the ranks of breeders, where a breeding program was also created. In the absence of imports from New Zealand, the program began with the breeding of Burmese and British Shorthairs. Next, breeders crossed the Mandalay obtained from the first matings with Burmeses.

Just two years later, in 2015, the Mandalay was recognized by the Australian Cat Federation (ACF) and the Australian Cat Control Council (CCCCA).

At the same time, in New Zealand, the gene pool of Mandalay had been depleted due to the low number of offspring since the creation of the breed. Jan Parson, Pat Hogan, Dorothy Horton and the other breeders who had been responsible for the development of the breed decided to create an experimental program, NZCF approved, to reintroduce matings similar to those that had given rise to the breed, that is to say, Burmese cat matings with dark, intense, short-haired stray cats. But, in the second generation, a large number of individuals had a problem with congenital hypothyroidism. This fiasco led to the decision to sterilize all the cats participating in the program., thus putting an end to it.

But, the problem persisted: they had to find a solution to expand the gene pool of the breed. In 2018, asked the NZCF for permission to import a Mandalay from australia. The NZCF granted the permit and the following year Bahati Outrageous Fortune, A male Mandalay ebony, was brought from Australia to help develop the breed in New Zealand. As the gene pool of the Mandalay in Australia it was also extremely limited, only one individual could be imported.

The Mandalay it is a very rare and very unknown breed of cat. Its breeding began in New Zealand at the end of the 20th century., and developed in Australia some twenty years later. But, remains limited to these two countries and has not spread beyond.

This explains that, outside these two countries, the breed is not recognized by the different national or international organizations. These may include, not even Fรฉdรฉration Internationale Fรฉline (FIFรฉ), not even International Cat Association (TICA), not even American Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA), neither him British Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF), neither him Livre Officiel des Origines Fรฉlines (LOOF) French recognize the Mandalay.

There is little chance that this will change in the future. In effect, on the one hand, the breed's population is still very limited, And on the other hand, is competed by the Bombay cat: this cat that also descends from American Burmese cat is extremely close to Mandalay, and it is already accepted by these organizations. It is not very plausible that the latter recognize two races so similar, as this could lead to confusion.

But, the Mandalay is recognized by the reference organizations of its two countries of origin: the New Zealand Cat Fancy (NZCF) from 1990, the Australian Cat Federation (ACF) and the Co-Ordinating Cat Control Council of Australia (CCCCA) from 2015.

Popularity of ยซMandalayยป

The development of Mandalay has been limited to New Zealand and Australia.

Even in these countries, its dissemination remains confidential. There are no statistics that give an idea of โ€‹โ€‹the population size of the breed, but it is very limited, just like your gene pool, which obviously also hampers any significant and rapid progress. In any case, in each of these countries there are less than a dozen breeders of Mandalay.

Regarding the geographical distance of these two countries with respect to Europe and North America in particular, obviously does not facilitate the development of the breed in the rest of the world, both then and now. The Bombay cat, developed by American breeders and also a descendant of the American Burmese cat, then i would be on my way. The Bombay is very close to Mandalay, although the two races are not strictly identical: the Bombay has a totally black coat and a slightly longer body.

So, the development of Mandalay outside of Oceania is not easy, especially since his future is uncertain even in his homeland. In fact, if New Zealand breeders cannot find a solution to expand the breed's gene pool, This can end up being affected by numerous health problems caused by excessive inbreeding.

Physical characteristics

Mandalay

The lines Mandalay New Zealand and Australian are quite different, since until 2019 the first specimen was not exported from one country to another. But, its appearance is quite similar, except for the brindle pattern of the coat.

On the other hand, whatever the country of origin, the Mandalay looks the same as his ancestor the American Burmese cat, except for the fur and the color of the eyes. The coat is darker than that of the American Burmese and completely solid, while the eyes go only from golden yellow to amber and should be intense.
On both sides of the Tasman Sea, it is a semi-linear cat of medium length and height. Its body is built around a strong, rounded chest, but its elegance is due in part to the fact that its strong muscles remain harmonized. But, the latter implies that it is heavier than it seems.

The back is flat between the shoulders and the rump, then continue with a straight tail of moderate length, that tapers and ends in a rounded tip.

The legs they are muscular, slim and well proportioned to the rest of the body. Hind legs are slightly longer than front legs. Both end in well defined oval feet.

The head rests on a neck moderately strong muscular. Profile, presents a concave curve between its upper part and the lower jaw. The skull is slightly rounded, then there is a clear break between the slightly rounded forehead and the straight nose.

The ears, well spaced on top of skull, are medium in size and slope slightly downward when viewed in profile. They are wide at the base, with rounded tips. Some kittens are born with oversized ears, but this disproportion disappears as they grow.

The eyes they are far apart, they are big and bright. His topline is straight and slopes towards the nose, while its bottom line is rounded. Its color ranges from golden yellow to amber, the latter being the most sought after.

The cheekbones they are wide and end in a wedge in the muzzle. In men, can become prominent with age. But, the jaw is strong and the chin is firm.

The Mandalay has hardly any undercoat, but has a short thin top coat, distinguished by its silky texture and very shiny appearance. This sheen is a sign of good health and is the most prominent feature of the breed., that gives it both grace and beauty.

The the fur color is solid: may be black ebony, bronze blue, dark chocolate brown, cinnamon, leonado, red, cream or even caramel with its apricot hue. In all cases, some rare and scattered white hairs tolerated.

The coat can also have a tortoiseshell color (a mixture of red and black) and a brindle pattern. But, the latter is only accepted in New Zealand, not in australia.

Mandalays and new colour Burmese – Rafoej Cattery – Weebly

Since the beginning of the decade 1950, approximately 30 years before breeders in New Zealand and Australia developed the Mandalay, others based in the United States and Canada developed the Bombay cat.

The Bombay is a cross between the American Burmese cat and the American shorthair cat and is recognized by the Cat Fanciersโ€™ Association amรฉricaine (CFA) and the Canadian Cat Association (CCA). Like the latter, his temperament is similar to that of American Burmese, and their physical characteristics are also very similar. The only differences are the smooth, darker coat and the intense color of the eyes, ranging from golden yellow to amber.

But, there are some differences between the Bombay cat and the Mandalay. In particular, the Bombay it has a slightly longer body and its fur is only black.

It has spread much further than its Oceanian cousin, and is especially known in Europe. This explains that it is recognized, among others, by the influencer Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) British. But, the GCCF does not consider it a breed in its own right, but simply a variety of Asian cat, which in turn is the result of matings between the European Burmes cat and the Persian cat. It also, the organization only accepts black ebony cats.

In France, the Livre Officiel des Origines Fรฉlines (LOOF) combine the Bombay cat and the American Burmese cat in the same standard. The organization distinguishes between the latter and the European Burmes cat, also known as Burmese English. The differences are physical: the American has a rounder head and a slightly more robust body.

In any case, organizations such as the CFA are unlikely, the AFC, and GCCF, the LOOF and all other organizations that recognize the Bombay cat do not end up also recognizing the Mandalay as a race in its own right, since these two cats are very similar. Recognizing them both and considering them as two different races would probably lead to confusion.

Character and skills

The Mandalay has inherited the temperament of his ancestor the American Burmese cat.

So, it is an ideal cat for a family, since he especially appreciates the presence of humans around him. He is usually very kind and affectionate with them.

They especially like to play with children, and they are excellent playmates, enthusiastic and energetic; the reverse is also usually true. He is very tolerant of them, but that does not mean that there are no risks on both sides. So, just like any other cat, should never be left alone with a young child: their interactions should always take place under the supervision of an adult.

To the Mandalay loves to be petted and has a great need for recognition, so it requires a lot of attention. It can even be a slightly clingy cat, who does not hesitate to follow their masters wherever they go and sit: in the kitchen, in front of the tv… You can also chat with them and be chatty, but their meows are soft and not loud, unless you want to reproach a lack of attention.

In other words, it's perfect for anyone who wants maximum interaction with their little friend. On the other hand, it is much less suitable for people who are away from home often or for long periods. They find it very difficult to tolerate being away from their family, especially if it is for long periods. They soon become anxious and develop behavior problems such as excessive licking, meows or even aggressiveness. Leaving several games at his disposal at those times helps to alleviate his discomfort., but the ideal is that you even share your home with another animal, either a companion or a cat-friendly dog. In fact, this ensures that you are never alone.

This coexistence is all the more feasible since this little feline is not aggressive for a penny. So, usually maintain peaceful relationships with their alter egos, as well as with dogs, at least, of course, those who can tolerate the presence of a cat. Things go better if the two partners are used to living together from an early age. If that is not the case, it is better to introduce them little by little, so that they get used to it and find their place.

In any case, that he lives under the same roof as a small rodent or a bird is a completely different story. In fact, his well-developed hunting instinct could turn the experiment upside down at any moment. If you come into contact with such a small animal, it is better to keep it in a cage or in a separate room to limit the risk of accidents.

Regarding the unknown humans entering their domain, not the type to be very suspicious of them. On the other hand, if you feel comfortable with them, it is very likely that you will approach them and ask for their attention. Having said that, even if it's not fearful, it is still essential that you have a cat tree to lean on to observe your little world, or just to rest.

Grooming and caring for the "Mandalay Cat"

The beautiful silky and satin coat of the Mandalay does not require complicated maintenance, especially since it has practically no undercoat. Brushing once a week is enough to remove dead hairs and give it a new shine.. But, during its annual molting period, it is better to brush it two or three times a week.

You should also check his ears once a week. Cleaning them with a damp cloth will remove impurities and reduce the risk of infection..

The weekly maintenance session is also an opportunity to check the eyes. If they are dirty, cleaning them with a damp cloth will also reduce the chance of an infection.

Brushing your cat's teeth is important to all breeds, but even more so for him Mandalay due to its predisposition to gingivitis. Do it at least once a week (and ideally every day) helps prevent plaque build-up, which can cause all kinds of more or less serious diseases by turning into tartar. It is necessary to systematically use a toothpaste designed specifically for cats.

Last, Once a month, you need to check the length of your claws, especially if you live indoors. In fact, if they get too long, they can break, annoy or harm you: Trimming them manually when necessary helps avoid these types of problems. Even for a person with access to the outside, this check is necessary, as natural wear and tear may not be enough. It also, these cares do not exempt you from providing your cat with a scratching post.

coat care, the ears, the eyes, the teeth and claws of his Mandalay does not require any special skills. But, to adopt the correct gestures and avoid injuring or traumatizing your cat, it is best to ask a veterinarian or professional cat groomer for advice the first time. In any case, It is essential to accustom your pet to these grooming sessions from a young age, so they are part of your routine and don't get recalcitrant.

In fact, once the owner has learned to carry out the different treatments, these moments can even become privileged moments of caresses and pampering. In fact, the Mandalay is always delighted to receive attention and affection, and does not hesitate to show it with small meows.

Indoor or outdoor cat?

Ideally, you should live in a house with a garden that you can access at any time through a cat flap when you feel like running. Curious, he loves to frolic, climb and hunt. They do not hesitate to leave their domain to follow a prey, but then they return quite naturally to their cozy nest.

If the outside is too dangerous to let you run free, you can walk him on a leash: generally does well if you get used to it from a young age, and thus it is avoided that it is enclosed between four walls.

How much activity does he need? "Mandalay Cat"?

Playing with their masters is also an activity that they love, In addition to stimulating you physically and mentally. His intelligence makes him an ideal candidate for anyone who wants to teach their cat tricks.. You can also test yourself through various interactive games that allow you to develop your skills.

In any case, whether your living environment is confined indoors or you have access to the outdoors, the Mandalay you need to have a scratching post at your disposal, like any of his classmates. Scratch is a compelling urge that cannot be denied. If there are no facilities for it, will not hesitate to turn to furniture.

Health and nutrition

Mandalay
Mandalay

The Mandalay has robust general health.

It also, is able to adapt to all climates. But, the lack of undercoat makes me afraid of drafts. Thus, in winter it is necessary to protect it from drafts to prevent it from catching a cold.

It also, like any breed of cat, are more likely to suffer from certain health problems. In this case, is the same one that his ancestor is predisposed to American Burmese cat:

  • Congenital endocardial fibroelastosis, characterized by thickening of the muscular walls of the heart leading to heart failure. The affected individual is easily out of breath, tires quickly and sometimes coughs. If it is not possible to solve the root problem, at least it is possible to improve the comfort of the animal with a lifelong medication that limits the symptoms;
  • The Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is the result of an enlarged heart that causes a decrease in the volume of blood circulating through the body. This causes the typical symptoms of heart failure: intense fatigue, weightloss, breathing difficulties, loss of appetite, etc. Several causes are possible (hereditary origin, nutritional deficiency, etc.), and the prognosis is usually bad. But, various pharmacological treatments allow the affected animal to gain a few months - or even years- of life;
  • The Mellitus diabetes, an endocrine disease caused by insufficient insulin secretion, leading to high blood sugar levels. Then the cat begins to eat and drink more and lose weight.. The only effective treatment is regular insulin injections throughout the cat's life;
  • hypokalemic myopathy, that usually appears between the second and the tenth month of age. It is caused by low potassium levels in the blood and manifests as general weakness, muscle pain and motor difficulties. Treatment with potassium supplements and diet adjustment is enough to solve the problem.. However, a risk of recurrence cannot be excluded;
  • The peripheral vestibular syndrome, a congenital abnormality of the inner ear. In this case, the kitten keeps its head bowed, have problems with motor coordination and involuntary eye movements and, in some cases, he's even deaf. The problem usually resolves itself when the animal grows;
  • The flat rib syndrome in kittens it is a hereditary disease in which the rib cage is deformed. The rib cage is flattened from birth, and is even hollowed out in the most severe cases. This causes both shortness of breath and hyperventilation., which causes reduced blood flow and can lead to syncope. This deformation can be fatal, but individuals who reach adulthood are saved and manage to live with it;
  • Bent tail, congenital and hereditary malformation that causes the tail to twist in the cartilage. But, it is not dangerous or incapacitating for the animal: the only consequence is aesthetic;
  • The elbow osteoarthritis, a degenerative disease, progressive and irreversible. It corresponds to a progressive destruction of the cartilage of the joint., that loses its role as a buffer. This causes pain that leads the cat to restrict its movements to avoid suffering, or even lethargy. But, it is possible to improve the cat's quality of life with analgesic and anti-inflammatory treatments that slow down the progression of the disease;
  • The orofacial pain syndrome, a very rare disease that can be inherited. Causes the animal to lick and chew excessively. Sometimes it is even very painful to feed. No treatment, but it is possible to stop the symptoms with analgesics or antiepileptics. It is also advisable to put a collar on the cat to prevent it from licking;
  • Lipemia of the aqueous humor of the eye, which only affects kittens and is characterized by the milky appearance of the eye. It is only temporary and resolves itself;
  • Dermoide corneal, congenital and hereditary malformation, characterized by the presence of cutaneous tissue in the conjunctiva and cornea. This irritates the conjunctiva and weakens the cornea.. This can be remedied with surgical intervention.;
  • The gingivitis, which is an inflammation of the oral mucosa caused by the accumulation of tartar on the teeth. The cat has bad breath, suffers, has difficulty eating and can no longer wash. Next, scraping and polishing required (always under general anesthesia), which may be accompanied by a treatment with antibiotics or anti-inflammatories;
  • Allergic reactions to products used during anesthesia. So, if it is necessary to carry out an operation of this type, it is always advisable to make sure that the professional is aware of this particularity.

In addition to these various conditions, the Mandalay also has a tendency to overweight, yes no to obesity. Obviously, the risk is especially pronounced for people who live exclusively indoors and are not very active. Not a problem to be taken lightly, as it can aggravate existing diseases or cause new ones.

Taking into account the high number of hereditary diseases to which the breed is predisposed, the interest in adopting a Mandalay from a serious breeder who carefully selects his breeders. In effect, Systematically excluding from breeding individuals with a disease that can be transmitted to their offspring significantly reduces the risk of obtaining kittens carrying these diseases.

It also, a good breeder ensures that kittens are well socialized from an early age and that they grow up in a suitable environment, so that they are not only healthy, but have a good head and legs. It also, must be able to present a certificate of good health issued by a veterinarian and a vaccination or health record that contains the vaccines administered to the animal.

From the moment the pet is adopted, the new owner is responsible for his health throughout his life. In particular, the new owner must take the animal to the vet at least once a year (and even more often as the animal ages) for a complete health check. This allows any health problems to be detected as soon as possible and, if required, treat it in the right conditions. This appointment is also an opportunity to carry out any necessary booster shots..

Last, the owner must take care to protect his cat from parasites by repeating his antiparasitic treatments as many times as necessary, throughout the year. This is especially important for a cat that spends most of its time outside., but it is also necessary for a cat that lives indoors, since it is not completely safe from the risks.

Life expectancy

10 to 17 years

Food

Like all its fellow men, the Mandalay requires a diet that meets your nutritional needs, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Must suit your age, your level of physical activity and your health status.

His propensity to overweight, or even obesity, forces a certain vigilance. In effect, his greed makes it difficult for him to regulate himself: contrary to what is possible - and even desirable- with many other cats, it is better to avoid giving him free access to his food. So, it is advisable to opt for meals given at fixed times, and show some rigor in determining your daily ration.

Industrial cat food is perfectly suitable for your needs, but human food rarely is, unless carefully selected for that purpose. Of course, to the Mandalay loves attention and won't hesitate to ask for a bite during the meal to join the feast. But, attention and food are two different things: it does you no favors to respond to this type of request, Nor does letting him finish the table scraps or rummage through the trash. This is especially true because some foods that humans enjoy are toxic to little felines..

The trend of Mandalay obesity makes it essential to control your weight at least once a month. If a slippage is evident - or even worse- during several successive weighings, it is necessary to visit the vet. Only a healthcare professional can diagnose the cause of the problem: improper diet, disease, side effect of a medication, etc. Once the cause is identified, can indicate how to remedy it.

It also, like all his peers, the Mandalay you must have fresh water at all times, regularly renewed.

For sale "Mandalay Cat"

Despite having a very limited gene pool, the breeding of Mandalay is trying to develop in New Zealand and Australia, but the breed is completely unknown abroad.

In New Zealand, your country of origin, there are just under a dozen breeders across the country. They sell their kittens for between 800 and 1800 New Zealand dollars (between 450 and 1000 EUR).

In Australia, the number of breeders is of the same order of magnitude. Adopt a kitten Mandalay costs between 700 and 1600 Australian dollars (between 400 and 1000 EUR).

whatever the country, there are big price differences between one and the other. Can be explained by the reputation of the farm, the line from which the animal is descended or its intrinsic characteristics, especially in terms of his physique. This last point is the one that explains why prices can vary even within the same litter..

In any case, the small number of breeders makes the choice relatively limited and it is necessary to wait several months before being able to adopt a representative of the breed.

If the breed is to be repatriated to a country other than the country of origin, It must be taken into account that transport costs and administrative costs will be added to the purchase price. It also, it is essential to know the legislation regarding the importation of animals in the country in which you reside and, of course, respect her, to avoid unpleasant surprises.

History

ยซSingapuraยป is the Malay name for Singapore. The name has also been given to a small cat considered the smallest domestic cat in the world and originally from the Southeast Asian city-state located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula.

In Singapura, brown or dark brown color is widespread in the genetic makeup and is characteristic of the local population of domestic cats. But, the fur of the Singapura is usually quite pale, and its origin story is not simple at all. It's not easy to find out.

Historically, the most widely accepted version was that of the International Cat Association (TICA), starring an American geophysicist, Hal Meadow, who was in Singapore at the beginning of the years 70, working for an oil company. His wife, Tommy, had been a judge of Cat Fanciersโ€™ Association (CFA) and was interested in breeding cats - he had bred the Burmese, to the Abyssinian and Siamese-, as well as by genetics - he had carried out genetic experiments with mice and rats -. Due to the interests of Tommy, Thing sent him three brown cats from Southeast Asia during a visit to the city-state in 1971. He had obtained them from the crew of a ship that had adopted them and in which he had sailed.

In 1974, When Thing He was posted to Singapore for work reasons, he moved with his wife and cats: two burmese and three descendants of those who had been sent from Asia three years earlier. In 1975, upon his return to the United States, the Meadow they brought a Burmese and five brown cats, including two kittens born in Singapore. Hal y Tommy Meadow started a breeding project to create a new breed to be called Singapura.

In 1980, Barbara Gilbertson, one of the first breeders of the Singapura cat, brought another cat to America, call Chiko, that he had obtained from SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) from Singapore, and that was included in the breeding program. Finally, in 1987, another breeder named Gerry Mayes traveled to Singapore to get some local stray cats, Known as "sewer cats" to the public due to their tendency to seek refuge in the city drainage system. These specimens were registered in the TICA and were incorporated into the breeding project of the Singapura.

Controversy

But, with the passage of time, other versions have emerged about the origin of the breed, that have caused controversy. The Meadows they first claimed to have captured one of their precursor cats in the vicinity of a Thai restaurant in Singapore and to have removed the other two from a nest found on the city's waterfront. This initial story was finally dismantled by a series of key events.

First of all, when the enthusiastic breeder Gerry Mayes traveled to Singapore in 1987 to bring "sewer cats", discovered that Meadow, when they arrived in 1974, had brought with them - and registered with the Singapore Ministry of National Development- Abyssinians and burmese. It also, No one on the ground seemed to have ever seen cats on the streets of Singapore that looked like the "gutter cats" described by Hal y Tommy Meadow.

Gerry Mayes he wondered if the Singapuras of Meadow were actually descended from Abyssinians and burmese that they had brought to Singapore. This did not stop him from bringing several cats from Singapore to the United States., but they could not be registered with the CFA as Singapuras, as they did not meet the breed criteria of the CFA. TICA agreed to register them. After five generations, the descendants of these cats are now recognized by the CFA as Singapuras.

around that same time, Lucy Koh, who had been collaborating with the Singapore Cat Club for a long time, undertook research and found very few cats in Singapore that met the criteria of the Singapura cat. He even claimed to have found a real Singapore cat, call Baby Bull, he had dark brown fur, much darker than the Singapuras ivory and sepia color Meadow. And what is more important, its size was much larger.

It also, Lucy Koh claimed to have a copy of a letter from 1975 of Tommy Meadow to the editor of Cat World Magazine, a month before she and her husband left Singapore. In this letter, allegedly declared his intention to achieve fame by passing American cats as singapurenses.

A third event that raised questions about the true origins of the Singapura happened in 1991. In that year, the Singapore Tourism Promotion Board (STPB) decided to grant the Singapura cat the national mascot title. After a contest to find the best nickname, the tourism body renamed it โ€œKucintaยซ, a crossword puzzle consisting of ยซkucinยป ("cat" in Malay) y ยซcyntaยป (ยซamorยป). Kucinta It also means "the one I love". Thus, the small feline's new name means "love cat", and is often known as the "Singapore love cat".

The STPB had asked Lucy Koh your opinion about him Singapura. He gave them his opinion that it was a american cat hybrid. I affirm that Tommy Meadow -participating in the Feline Society of Singapore (SFS) as a registrar- he had created the breed standard himself and had changed the procedures for registering cats at the SFS. By refusing to give credit to this information, the STPB resorted to Tommy Meadow to give his version, what was it, of course, very different. Of course, the STPB did not want to give up its great promotional campaign based on the use of the kitten as a national emblem.

Seeing this, Lucy Koh told the story to Sandra Davie, reporter of Singapore Strait Times. The reporter investigated and ended up publishing an article stating that, far from having rescued Singapore's stray cats, as he had stated, Tommy Meadow Instead, he had created Singapura in Houston (Texas), hybridizing Abyssinians with burmese.

A true novel by Le Carrรฉ

Summoned to appear before the CFA to explain itself, the breeder adapted her version stating that the cats that created the breed were, In fact, those that her husband sent her in 1971, when I was already working in Singapore. Apparently, found the cats on or near the docks in Lo Yang District. To justify your previous lies, claimed that Thing I was then on a very discreet mission, if not secret, for the oil company that had hired him. In other words, his interlocutors were almost immersed in a real spy novel.

Tommy Meadow he also denied having raised Abyssinians during the time he was in charge of raising the Singapura. He also developed several responses to counter his critics' arguments.. It seems that his explanations were accepted by the feline associations, since the Singapura is still recognized by most of them. The CFA went so far as to affirm that, Regardless of whether the mating of the original cats occurred on the streets of Singapore or Michigan, the breed's gene pool originated in Southeast Asia, as in the case of Burmese and the Abyssinian.

In any case, having died in 2004, Mrs Meadow you will never have the opportunity to provide new information about the history of this feline breed with which you were so closely linked.

Recognition by feline associations and notoriety

In 1979, TICA recognized the Singapura as a "natural" race (non hybrid) and allowed him to compete in championships. The CFA recognized the breed in 1982, but he didn't pass her for the championships until 1988. In United States, the breed is also recognized by the American Cat Fanciers’ Association (ACFA).

In Europe, the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) and Fรฉdรฉration Internationale Fรฉline (FIFรฉ), the main feline associations of Great Britain and Europe, they also recognize it.

So there is unanimity, despite the controversy surrounding the breed.

The Singapura It remains a rare breed, above all because feline associations - in particular the CFA- They consider it a "natural" breed and, Therefore, crossing is not allowed. So, the number of their representatives can only increase very slowly. According to the CFA, the world population of Singapuras it was about 5.000 individuals in 2006. In France, fewer than fifty births are registered per year.

The Singapura he's a beautiful little fellow, loving and lively. It is a lively cat, energetic and very active, who is also very affectionate and friendly, since he loves human company. They love to lie on their owner's lap or shoulders and are delighted to show their affection, and expect the same in return.

Intelligent and curious, they love to play and climb on shelves and cabinets to get a good look at their surroundings. Throughout his life, her youthful and playful temperament never leaves her. This explains that it adapts very well to the presence of children or other domestic animals., who are welcome playmates for him. But, like any other breed of cat, should not be left alone in the presence of a very young child.

The Singapura cat he is also known for being very calm. He doesn't meow very often and his voice is quite discreet..

If we add to this that they like the heat and that they are reluctant to go outside when it is cold, we have the ingredients of an ideal domestic cat. But, his need for activity makes it essential to provide him with a tree and cat toys to keep him from destroying the floor, especially when left alone for a while.

They don't like to be alone and they don't get along. So, you better have a home where you are not left alone too often or for too long, and in which at least one person spends some time with him every day.

The short and fine coat of the Singapura It does not require a lot of care. Brushing the cat's coat weekly is enough.

Daily brushing of the cat's teeth is also recommended to prevent periodontal disease.

Last, the cat's ears should be examined weekly and, if required, clean them with a cotton ball or soft cloth soaked in a mixture of half and half cider vinegar and warm water.

Indoor or outdoor cat?

Thanks to its small size, cats Singapura can be easily kept in a small flat. It would be great if you could provide a cat proof balcony or, even better, a garden. But, even without this welcome change, the Singapura you will feel right at home if the floor is designed accordingly and there are enough opportunities to play and climb.

Much more important to him Singapura that the opportunity to spend time outdoors is the company of a companion and that his owners do not leave him alone for an unnecessarily long time, then it can be kept as an indoor cat without any problem.

How much activity does he need? "Singapura cat"?

Whether it is a female Singapura like a male Singapura, don't underestimate the high energy level and intelligence of this breed. So, a feline companion is almost essential, so that the Singapura, with its social nature, never be completely alone and can thus also dissipate energy during playful confrontations and fast chase runs.

But, the Singapura cat is very people-oriented and should not be left alone for a long time. It is much more important that caregivers take time every day for play sessions and cuddles. Especially hunting and intelligence games go well with representatives of the breed Singapura.

Health and nutrition

How this breed has a very limited gene pool, it is very possible that hereditary or congenital diseases occur in the Singapura. But, is considered robust and not prone to disease.

For the moment, according to him Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF), the leading British feline association, only the progressive retinal atrophy and pyruvate kinase deficiency as diseases to which the Singaporea is especially susceptible.

As the name of the disease indicates, cats affected by progressive retinal atrophy experience gradual deterioration of vision due to retinal atrophy. The pyruvate kinase deficiency can cause some form of anemia in affected animals. This can cause lethargy., diarrhea, loss of appetite and weight, and affect the appearance of the cat's coat. The disease can even lead to premature death of the animal.

Both can be detected by genetic testing, allowing serious breeders of the Singapura cat identify and eliminate individuals carrying the defective genes from their breeding grounds. Any prospective buyer should require proof that the kitten they wish to adopt has been tested negatively..

It is interesting to note that these two diseases are also present in the Abyssinian cat. The Abyssinian is the only breed of cat in which progressive retinal atrophy has been shown to be congenital. It is also one of the two races suspected of being the cause of Singapura

Last, it has also been reported that the female Singapura have a predisposition to uterine inertia. In cats affected by this failure of the reproductive system, contractions are insufficient to allow expulsion of the fetus when the cat gives birth, and then a caesarean section is necessary. As there is no test to detect this disease, It is important to be vigilant when giving birth to a Singapura for the first time and seek veterinary assistance if possible. If you are found to have this condition, it is recommended that she be spayed or neutered, as any future childbirth would be risky for her and her unborn babies.

History

The Turkish Angora cat It, as the name reflects, a breed of cat native to Turkey, where she was prized for her long hair and fur. Angora is the ancient name of the capital of Turkey, currently Ankara. This breed of cat has a long history, since it is estimated that it can be traced back to ancient Egypt.

In XVII century, the Turkish Angora cat It was introduced to Europe by an Italian explorer named Pietro Della Valle and by a French named Nicolas de Peiresc, who brought several copies to their respective countries. It was a success, since it was the first breed of long-haired cat, since the other European domestic cats were short or semi-long hair. The Swedish naturalist Linnaeus called it Cattus Angorensis to distinguish it from the domestic cat and Chartreux cat, and the French biologist Buffon called it "Angora cat with long hair and completely white.".

Such was the popularity of the cat's fur color that it served as a "royal gift", being appreciated by the entire European aristocracy, especially the court of Louis XV. Painters of the time even chose her as a model to represent their cats in their paintings, for its elegance and beauty.

In the 19th century, the Turkish Angora cat contributed to the birth of Persian cat, to the one who transmitted the gene responsible for long hair. But with the passage of time and the dangerous crosses with other breeds of cats, the Turkish Angora lost the characteristics that had made it famous. At the same time, the dazzling success of the Persian, chosen as a breeding base by the English in Victorian times, caused a disinterest in the Turkish Angora cat as dazzling as its success, to the point that it almost disappeared after WWII. The Turkish government decided to protect the remaining specimens to ensure the survival of the breed, so he decided to prohibit its export.

Finally, The breed was saved by American cat breeders who managed to obtain them from the Ankara Zoo in 1959 a couple of Turkish Angora Cats llamados Star (What does "Star" mean?) y Yร„ยฑldร„ยฑzcik ("Little Star"). The current Turkish Angoras were born from this couple. Interest in the breed was rekindled in 1963, when the breeders in question presented her to the rest of the world. La C.F.A. (Cat Fanciers’ Association, one of the leading American feline organizations) recorded the first animals in 1970 and recognized the breed in 1973. La F.I.Fe (Fรฉdรฉration Internationale Fรฉline) did the same in 1988.

Despite its beauty, the Turkish Angora cat it is not yet widespread in the world and is still protected in Turkey: some zoos continue to breed to ensure the survival of this breed, which is still considered "fragile". But, the Turkish Angora It is one of the favorite feline breeds of the French, and is often featured at feline shows.

The brown cats were described and represented together with the Siamese and the Korat cat in numerous manuscripts of poems and paintings found in the city of Ayutthaya, which was then the capital of the kingdom. They were considered very beautiful, but above all, good luck charms for their owners.

    These chocolate-colored felines were among the first to be imported from Siam to the UK, where they arrived at the end of the 19th century. The texts of this time, like the writings of an English breeder named Madame French and passages from Frances Simpson's book of 1903 The Cat Book, describe a Siamese cat with brown fur and blue-green eyes.

    It is probable that not all imported cats of this color were of the same breed and that among them there were burmese, Siamese and the Tonkinese cat (a cruce enters Burmese and Siamese). But, it is difficult to differentiate the breeds from the available writings and drawings.

    In any case, It was at this time that the term โ€œSwiss Mountain Catsโ€ was coined to designate cats with this peculiarity. But, historians cannot establish whether it covered all chocolate-colored specimens imported from Thailand in the late 19th century, or only those of one or more specific races.

    Brown cats were exhibited in Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. At an exhibition held in England in 1888, one of them won the first prize, which tends to show that felines of this type enjoyed a certain visibility and popularity at the time. This is corroborated by the fact that in 1928, in another exhibition held in Great Britain, the British Siamese Cat Club went on to award a special prize to the chocolate-colored specimens.

    Just two years later, in 1930, god a ride, promoting only the breeding of cats Siamese blue-eyed. But, a large majority of brown individuals had green eyes and not blue, so they were suddenly excluded from competitions organized under the aegis of the organization. Logically, breeders began to abandon this color, and the number of individuals wearing it drastically decreased.

    This decline continued until the years 50, when a group of British breeders, among which were Baroness Miranda Von Ullman and Anne Hargreaves, they set out to give these cats a new life. They studied the inheritance of the chocolate gene and launched a breeding program based on their research.. New crosses were made between Siamese chocolate-colored, domestic cats blacks and the Russian Blue Cat, which resulted in the tan brown as we know it today. The first kitten regarded as a Havana brown was born in the UK in 1952 and it was called Elmtower Bronze Idol. Result of a cross between a Siamese cat seal point carrier of the chocolate gene and a black cat also carrier of the gene, became one of the founders of the breed.

    The main British feline organism, the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF), recognized the new breed in 1958 as Chestnut Brown Foreign. Twelve years later, in 1970, was replaced by the Havana brown. There are two opposing hypotheses to explain the choice of this name: the first is that it refers to its brown color similar to tobacco, while the other claims that it comes from a breed of rabbit of the same color called Havana.

    Even before its official recognition in Great Britain, the breed had taken its first steps in the United States. In fact, after coming into contact with Mrs.. From Ullman, an American breeder named Elsie Quinn imported two cats into 1956. A selection process was started somewhat different from that of the United Kingdom, so soon the American and English types were differentiated. This is still the case today, the first being more massive than the second, whose morphology is long and thin, apparently modeled on that of the Siamese.

    The Cat Fanciersโ€™ Association (CFA) accepted the breed in 1964, and The International Cat Association (TICA) did the same in 1979. Both took the North American version of the breed as a reference., whose features differed significantly from the British model recognized by the GCCF: the latter had a longer and thinner oriental morphology. Despite this formalization of the existence of two very different types of cats, the name remained the same for all bodies: Havana brown. In 1983, the TICA accepted the lilac color in its standard, whereas until then only the color chocolate was allowed. Quite consistently, decided at the same time to change the name with which he recognizes the breed, in favor of him Havana. In France, the Livre Officiel des Origines Fรฉlines (LOOF) did the same and began to accept the lilac color, but kept the denomination Havana brown.

    In United States, the beginning of the years 90 was characterized by the loss of interest in breeding this breed, whose number dropped a lot. The breed became especially rare and, at the end of the decade, the CFA only had 12 hatcheries and some 130 representatives of the breed throughout the country.

    The situation worried some breeders, who feared that the cats would disappear. They contacted Dr.. Leslie Lyons, who was then working at the California Veterinary Genetics Laboratory, so that with your help they could develop a breeding program. The analyzes of the genome of the Havana brown revealed excessive inbreeding. In other words, a healthy development of the breed was only possible if new individuals were introduced in the breeding programs.

    Thus, the breeders asked the CFA to open the breed to new crosses, what was accepted by the organization in 1997. Since that year, it has been possible to cross the brown Havana with siamese cats Seal Point and Chocolate Point, Oriental Longhair cat, as well as with domestic cats blacks and blues not beggars in the United States. If the individuals born from these crosses are brown, are recognized by the CFA as Havana brown. On the other hand, regardless of its color, if they cross paths with the Havana brown, their offspring is considered by the organization as Havana brown.

    This show turned out to be a success: expanded the breed's gene pool and kept it healthy, at the same time that it allowed to continue increasing the number of dogs in the country. These authorizations are still valid today., but they are still exclusive to the United States, since organizations from other countries do not allow these crossings.

    But, the surge in popularity was short-lived, and the Havana brown is now at the bottom of the CFA's annual enrollment rankings, in the post 42 of 45 in 2018, after falling steadily in previous years. These may include, early in the decade 2010, rather occupied the position 30 or 35.

    But, the problem of the lack of diversity in the different lines also arose in other places, like the UK. During the decade of the 90, some changes in the selection of Havana brown and the Siamese modified the quality of the fur of the latter and other morphological parameters, what some people did not like.

    In 1996, a breeder named Joan Judd expressed concern about the future of the breed, What, in addition to these changes away from its original appearance, suffered from a clear lack of representation. He wrote an article explaining, among other things, that the Havana brown couldn't survive without an influx of foreign blood. Under your direction, a small group of breeders, among which were Mrs.. P. Sharp-Popple, la Sra. S. Miller and Linda and Charlie Spendlove, selected some specimens and developed a joint breeding program called Pure Havana. As such, the Sr. and mrs. Spendlove imported a subject from the French breeding of Claire Rassat. Christened St Evroult Gatsby, was initially registered with the GCCF as a Havana brown.

    In view of its traditional pattern, breed enthusiasts Havana brown The modern model did not look favorably on the five litters it produced and complained to the GCCF, requesting that St Evroult Gatsby be removed from the breeding program. But, they came across a number of enthusiasts who had noticed the qualities of the traditional model through this small group of cats, and defended him before the association. The GCCF then proposed that these cats form a new breed, which was baptized as Suffolk and officially recognized by the organization in 2014. So, the Suffolk is considered a separate breed from the Havana brown, although it is very similar to him. It can be chocolate or lilac color. 13 Suffolks were registered with the organization in 2018, and 35 in 2019.

    In France, the Havana brown is very underrepresented. The number of people registered each year in the LOOF does not exceed fifteen, for a total of 108 between 2010 and 2019.
    Worldwide, its total population is estimated to be no more than a thousand, so it is still a rare feline breed.

    The Havana brown cat It was developed mainly in the United Kingdom and the United States. But, the selections made and the breeding programs applied were significantly different between these two countries, so over the years two different models emerged: the Havana brown of English type and the of American type.

    The former has a very long morphology and is close to its cousins โ€‹โ€‹and ancestors from the East, especially the Siamese. It is a very fine and muscular cat.

    As for him Havana brown American, it is more solid and round, deviating from the elongated morphology to sometimes approach the semi-free type. Although more rectangular and strong, it is no less elegant.

    Another example is the Suffolk, created in the early 21st century by British enthusiasts of the Havana brown who opposed the evolution that the race was experiencing in their country. The Suffolk it's a kind of Havana brown traditional, as opposed to the modern version that is now in the country. The GCCF recognized his work in 2014, recognizing it as a breed in its own right.

    Character and skills

    The Havana brown he is an affectionate cat, friendly and intelligent. It also, unlike its ancestor the Siamese, it is quite calm and serene.

    He is also more adaptable than most of his peers., since it is not one of those who are scared by a change of environment, for example. This flexibility makes it a good option for someone who wants to take their cat on vacation or is moving frequently., for example.

    To be happy and at ease, this constantly seeking attention-loving companion needs a lot of interaction with humans. He likes to follow his master around the house and accompany him in housework. So, needs an owner who is present often and who does not fail to show him that he loves him every day. This makes it a very good cat breed choice for an older person., and a very bad one for an active person who spends most of his time away from home.

    Very tactile, does not shy away from contact with its owner. On the other hand, you like to physically interact with him, with a marked tendency to touch him stretching the leg to attract his attention. He also uses his paw a lot to examine things that are interesting to him.

    These qualities make it an ideal cat for children., especially since he never tires of playing for hours.

    On the other hand, can be exclusive, as close to its owners as it is shy and distant with strangers, at least at the beginning.

    Usually, they get along very well with other animals, including dogs, provided they are gradually introduced or, even better, from an early age. But, it is advisable to take some precautions if you are brought to live with rodents, birds or fish, since the Havana brown is a great player and his ability to find in any object -or small animal- an exciting toy is awesome. Be careful to store her socks and other small items that are easy to transport, or you may not see them again. Having said that, the games he likes the most are those that involve interaction with their owner. It is an excellent candidate to teach your cat tricks, and also excels at solving puzzles.

    Last, if he is not as talkative as the Siamese, nevertheless likes to chat with its owners through soft meows.

    This species likely dates back many millennia. Archaeologists have found evidence that the first domesticated cats lived on the island of Cyprus, neighboring Greece, ago 10.000 years. It seems reasonable that, over the years, some of those cats will emigrate to Greece on fishing or trading boats, where they were undoubtedly well received for their ability to mouse. The Aegean cat They may also be related to Turkish cat breeds, as the Angora.

    Very often we can see many cats of this type sitting in the ports, waiting for the return of the fishermen, who won't let them miss their share of the catch. They are not afraid of water, so they can fish independently while diving in shallow water.

    These cats, common in their homeland, they have only been recognized as a distinct breed in the last two decades. Some consider them a Greek national treasure. So far, they have not been recognized by any cat registry, as the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) wave The International Cat Association (TICA).

    History

    The Cyprus cat It is a breed of cat native to the island of Cyprus, located in the Mediterranean Sea, south of turkey. The history of the relationship between Cypriots and cats is very old. In fact, during the excavation of a Neolithic tomb in the village of Shillourokambos in 2004, French archaeologists discovered a cat skeleton buried alongside a human skeleton, dating from about 9500 years before Christ. This discovery was even more important, as it is the oldest evidence of human domestication of cats.

    Although the small cats had been present on the island for thousands of years, the race Aphrodite had benefited from many other influences. The first proof of this is found in the Life of Constantine, written towards the year 338 by Bishop Eusebius of Caesarea (235-369) during the reign of the Roman Empress Helen (250-330). It is said that the Roman empress Helena (250-330 d.C.) discovered during a visit to Cyprus that, after a drought 37 years, the island was infested with poisonous snakes, especially around monasteries located in dry and rocky areas. He decided to send hundreds of cats from Egypt by boat to regulate its population. The monasteries took care of the newcomers: they lived around the convents and the monks were in charge of feeding and caring for them.

    This tradition continued for centuries, even to this day. In 1484, the Franciscan friar Francesco Suriano, recounting his trip to the Holy Land and his visit to the island and the monastery of San Nicolรกs de los Gatos, He said "it's wonderful to see them.", because almost all of them are mutilated by snakes; one has lost a nose, another an ear… And it is curious that when it comes to eating, to the sound of a bell, meet at the monastery; and when they have eaten enough, to the sound of the same bell, they all go out together to fight the snakes.

    But not only the Romans brought cats to the island. It was invaded by the Ottomans in 1571 and then occupied by Great Britain in 1878. In both cases, cats were put on board ships to ward off rats and mice. When the ships docked off the shores of Cyprus, some escaped and stayed on the island, mixing and reproducing with the local population.

    Most Cypriots have always resented the large cat population on their island. Cats were often abused, killed or poisoned with impunity, what is still happening today.

    The beginnings of the breed Aphrodite

    In 2005, by chance, an English cat breeder named Teresa Litherland moved to Cyprus. He was shocked by the treatment the cats received there, and at the same time he realized the very different and unique characteristics of many of them. They were large compared to European cats, with long and muscular bodies, hind legs slightly longer than front legs, long bushy tails, triangular heads and fairly large ears. A beautiful cat he named Cassidy and a female he named Lady came soon into his life as they entered his garden.. They were the first breeding pair to create the breed Aphrodite as we know it today. Next, set out to breed them to see if their characteristics were passed on to offspring. That's how it went, and this success convinced her to embark on an ambitious project: getting the Cypriot cat recognized as a breed in its own right.

    The recognition of the breed Aphrodite

    Of 2005 to 2008, Teresa Litherland produced 4 generations of kittens. Some were big, long or short hair, others were smaller, mostly short haired. In 2008 met Andreas Mobius in Cyprus, international judge of the World Cat Federation (WCF) โ“˜, and presented them. They were all larger than the wild cats of Cyprus and had a truly unique appearance., both in its skeleton and in different features such as the ears, the eyes and the shape of the mouth. Andreas Mobius focused solely on the big cats and came to the conclusion that they did indeed have unique characteristics and that it made sense to continue this project with a view to gaining recognition as a Cyprus cat breed.. Decided to call the race Giant aphrodite in reference to its impressive size and the goddess Aphrodite What, according to legend, was born in the waters of the island.

    That same year, in 2008, the Teresa Litherland se le union Lynn Nyland, a friend from England who was also touched by the situation of the local cats and who decided to help her carry out her project. She, too, realized that the best way to improve her situation in the long term, ensuring adequate protection, was to make the locals realize that they had a treasure, some cats that could be the envy of the whole world. the only way to do it, as difficult as it was, was to get the recognition of the race.

    In 2009, they created the Cyprus National Cat Association (CyCNBA), that Aphrodite set out to promote. A few months after its creation, became a full member of the World Cat Federation (WCF) โ“˜.

    As they continued their work, and still aiming to breed Aphrodite was recognized as a breed in its own right, they sent Dr.. Leslie A. Lyons, from the Laboratory of Feline Genetics, a letter of intent. Lyons, from the Laboratory of Feline Genetics of the University of California, Davis ((UNITED STATES)UU.), I take 248 cat DNA samples, mixing individuals from their breeding program with those they simply cared for. At the beginning of 2012, the geneticist concluded that they form a distinct and unique population.

    They also opened their association to new members, whose breeding work they supervised with great care. The number of litters was a maximum of two per year, and they were strictly controlled. Those who did not conform to the breed standard were castrated, whether they had long or short hair. Others, intended for breeding, they were subjected to tests to check their DNA and thus preserve the purity of the breed. It also, since they couldn't afford to keep all the kittens, the two friends sent some to foster homes or kennels in Europe.

    A few months after Dr.. Lyons will present his findings, the WCF officially recognized the breed as the Long Haired Giant Aphrodite. It was the first time that the recognition of a new feline breed was based on DNA tests.

    In the news, the organization also recognizes the short-haired version as Short Haired Giant Aphrodite. But, refuses to recognize smaller cats as part of the breed.

    With this, disagrees The International Cat Association ETHICS โ“˜, that in 2017 granted the breed recognition with preliminary status, prelude to full recognition. Decided to admit both varieties (long-haired and short-haired), as well as the giant individuals and the smallest (that usually have short fur). Like this, the name of Aphrodite covers no less than four possible combinations.

    The fact that there were individuals with short and long hair on the island is related to the fact that Cyprus is partially covered by mountains. The cats that live there have adapted to the living conditions of their environment. Like this, the fact that they have an undercoat and long hair, allows them to cope with the very cold and snowy weather of winter. At the same time, their large size allows them to hunt larger and more dangerous prey, like big rodents, lizards or snakes. On the other hand, those that live on the coast have a shorter coat and a less dense undercoat, since the temperatures there are much milder. They are also usually smaller in size, like their prey, mainly city mice or rats.

    The opposition between TICA and WCF continues until today. The other major organizations worldwide have not been able to settle the debate: either the Fรฉdรฉration Internationale Fรฉline (FIFรฉ), the American Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA), the Livre Officiel des Origines Fรฉlines (LOOF) French or the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) British, they just don't recognize the breed Aphrodite.

    The CyCNBA still exists today, and has expanded its missions to an awareness role in the island's schools, in order to teach future generations that cats must be protected and receive the respect and care they deserve.

    Popularity of the "Cyprus cat (Saint Helen cat)"

    Although it is recognized by the World Cat Federation (WCF) and The International Cat Association (TICA), the international development of Aphrodite continues to be hampered by the fact that the vast majority of other leading organizations have not yet followed suit. The prohibition of crossing with other breeds imposed by the institutions that recognize it also contributes to limiting its development..

    But, there are a handful of breeders in Europe, Asia and the United States that are members of the TICA and that they have decided to start raising the Aphrodite, either a giant or smaller race, short-haired or long-haired. But, this is not the case in france, Belgium and Switzerland, for example, where there are no breeders. In fact, it is still difficult to adopt a representative of the breed outside its island of origin.

    In cyprus, the Cyprus Cats National Breed Association (CyCNBA) and the "Aphrodite" kennel continue to breed the breed.

    Character and skills

    The Aphrodite has a gentle and affectionate demeanor, but it is also a live and very active animal, whether he's keeping himself busy or interacting with his owners.

    They have an athletic body, they need to use to keep their balance. So, needs room to frolic, play or chase small prey. A life within the four walls of a flat is far from ideal for him: it is better to have a garden or access to the outdoors.

    The aphrodite "Cyprus cat (Saint Helen cat)"develops a very strong relationship with the people who care for her, they feed her, they pamper her and take care of her. Needs attention but is not possessive, enjoying their moments of independence and seclusion. So, must have places to do it, especially if strangers regularly come to the house. In fact, he is as sociable with his family as he is shy with her, preferring to hide rather than say hello.

    On the other hand, gets along especially well with the children of the house, especially if they are old enough to have learned to behave with respect and delicacy with him, avoiding, for example, pulling or hitting his ears when playing with him.

    A good option to allow you to spend your high energy is to share your home with another animal. Cats often enjoy the company of other cats, especially if they are as active as him. That your cat lives with a dog is also perfectly feasible, especially if they live together since they were little.

    On the other hand, it is better to give up the idea that it lives in harmony under the same roof as a rodent or a bird, because the Aphrodite has a very strong hunting instinct. It also, during their outings, this activity is their main occupation.

    Last, It is important to note that the "Cyprus cat (Saint Helen cat)" does not reach full maturity until 4 or 5 years of age. Develops slowly and remains a kitten for a long time, both physiologically and psychologically. It is important to take it into account to take care of it properly: whereas an adult cat is quite independent, a kitten requires more attention and care.

    Grooming "Cyprus cat (Saint Helen cat)"

    Both short-haired and long-haired cats should be brushed once or twice a week to remove dead hair and dirt., and to prevent knots from forming. Once this is done, you can use a velvet or calfskin cloth to give a good shine to his coat. How he loves pampering, will appreciate it even more.

    In the case of long-haired cats, it is advisable to insist on brushing the collar, of the hollows of the front and rear legs and the tail to avoid knots. Without regular and rigorous maintenance, these become impossible to untangle, and there is no choice but to cut his fur. In this way, beauty and aesthetics would be lost, as well as protection against the cold.

    Unlike other races, the "Cyprus cat (Saint Helen cat)" only molt once a year: their fur falls out in large clumps in spring. Although this may be impressive, it's quite normal. Brushing helps keep the coat in good condition, but do not insist on it, as it can cause hair to pull out before it is ready to go out.

    It is also absolutely necessary to clean his ears once or twice a week with a damp cloth., especially since it is easily prone to ear infections (otitis, etc.).

    This is also an opportunity to brush your cat's teeth and check that there are no problems in this area. (caries, tartar deposits, etc.). Lack of dental care can lead to very serious illnesses, like septicemia.

    Once a week, wiping the corners of the eyes with a damp cloth will ensure they stay clean, and thus the risk of problems in this area will be reduced.

    To the Aphrodite he likes to run around outside and do his first steps in the trees. So, it is usually not necessary to cut the nails manually. But, you have to check them once a month and trim them if they get too long.

    When a change in diet is required, for example because a new product is needed due to age and / or unwanted weight gain, the fragility of your stomach makes it very important to avoid doing it abruptly. More so than any other race, this change should be made within the framework of a gradual and careful dietary transition, so that your stomach can gradually get used to the new product.

    Given your level of activity, the Aphrodite not especially prone to obesity. But, remember that no cat is immune, especially if it has been sterilized. So, a rule of thumb for keeping your cat in good health is to make sure it doesn't have a tendency to put on weight, and not allow the situation to continue, since this would lock him in a vicious circle (the fatter a cat is, less wants to move). If weight gain is observed for several months in a row, you have to go to the vet, who is the only one capable of determining if the problem is medical (disease, medication, etc.) or is it related to the cat's diet (inadequate feeding and / or insufficient quantity).
