This group 9 of the FCI classification (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) includes 26 races, one of which is provisionally accepted, the “Russkiy Toy”.
The breeds of this group are divided into 11 sections, built according to various criteria (morphological or geographic) or by default. Each of them includes only a few races, or even just one.
So, the breeds of this group are of varied morphological types, but they still have the common characteristic of being small in size (with the exception of Giant caniche). The classification criterion in this group is their function as companion dogs., excluding any other use.
Some breeds in this group may have originally been used as utility dogs due to their particular abilities: the Poodle for duck hunting, the Griffons or the Bulldog frances for surveillance or as buzzards in stables and warehouses,…. But most are breeds that have been selected from the beginning with the aim of turning them into pleasure dogs..
If these dogs are of no use, they are far from useless: the fact that the subjects of all groups are increasingly adopted mainly or exclusively by their company shows that in our cultural model, this species tends to be considered as a fully integrated animal in the home.
