Irish Red and White Setter
Irlanda FCI 330 . Setter

Setter Irlandรฉs Rojo y Blanco

Irish hunters consider the Irish Red and White Setter higher than Irish Red Setter because of its calmer temperament and because it is less visible in the autumn landscape.

History

The Irish Setter it was probably well known in the late 17th century. Outside of ireland, little is known about the existence of two varieties of Irish Setter: the Irish Red and White Setter and the Irish Red Setter. It is the red and white variety that preceded the other, and it is a judicious selection that developed the uniform red color.

When the Irish setters were first exhibited shortly after the middle of the 19th century, there was a lot of confusion about its color. At the end of the 19th century, the red variety had outshone the red and white, which became so rare that the breed was thought to have become extinct.

In the Decade of 1920, the breeders tried to revive the breed and in 1944 the breed was sufficiently recovered to form a club. In the news, the breed is enjoying a slight revival, and you can find many Irish Red and White Setter in exhibitions and fields.

The current club, the Labor and Exhibition Society of the Irish Red and White Setter, was founded in 1981. Thanks to your efforts and your line of action, the breed is now well established nationally and internationally.

The Irish Red and White Setter, in competition with other breeds of Pointing Dogs, has been successful in field trials, and currently there are a good number of working and exhibition champions.

Originally all Irish Setter were, mostly, red, or red and white, but around 1880 breeders began to prefer the variety of solid red color and as a result, the race was on verge of extinction.

Physical characteristics

Exist 2 varieties of Irish Setter, which differ in both their morphology and their behavior in the field.

The Irish Red Setter can be compared to the thoroughbred horse, all steel and tension, no superfluous meat or thick muscles. It must give the impression of extreme speed and everything about it contributes to this: dry fabrics (light but strong skeleton), long and dense muscles, thin and tight skin, without jowl.

The Irish Red and White Setter is similar to the Hunter: very resistant, powerful and robust. The chest is more rounded than the red one and its skin is thicker.

The coat is white with solid red spots.

Height and weight

    ▷ Male size: Of 62 to 66 cm.

    ▷ female size: Of 57 to 61 cm.

    ▷ Male weight: Of 20 to 25 kg

    ▷ female weight: Of 18 to 23 kg

Character and skills

The kind and caring Irish Red and White Setter not only is it a popular hunting dog. Thanks to its excellent ability to smell and its strong natural instincts to point and recover, does double duty as a friend of the family. He likes children and can fit in well in a family with children, with the caveat that he's quite rambunctious, especially when it's a puppy, and should always be supervised when there are young children.

The Irish Red and White Setter is always alert, so it is a good watchdog, but does not have the protective nature of a guard dog. In general, gets along with other dogs and is friendly with cats when raised with them. But keep in mind that it only has a score of 3 In "kindness with cats" on a scale of 1 to 5.

This is an active sporty dog รขโ‚ฌโ€นรขโ‚ฌโ€นthat needs to exercise daily. Take it for a run, to take a long walk, walk him for half an hour twice a day or play ball until his arms ache. All of these activities will help you satisfy your need to be outside doing something.. If you are interested in dog sports, is an excellent candidate for agility, the flyball, obedience, the rally and the crawl. It is nice, friendly and mild-mannered once he's past the puppy stage, and it also has wood to be a good therapy dog รขโ‚ฌโ€นรขโ‚ฌโ€นto visit facilities such as nursing homes and children's hospitals.

In the countryside, the Irish Red and White Setter work at a moderate pace, without ever straying too far from the hunter. He is full of curiosity and seeks hunting in the field. Choose it if your hunting ground is wooded or near a river or lake (better suited to large open spaces).

With regard to training, the Irish Red and White Setter may be a contradiction. He's kind but headstrong, smart but slow to mature. Train him with a light touch so as not to distort his determination, his courage and his high spirit.

Health

All dogs have the potential to develop genetic health problems, like all people have the potential to inherit diseases. Avoid any breeder that does not offer a health guarantee for the puppies, to tell you that the breed has no known problems or to keep puppies isolated from the main part of the house for health reasons. A reputable breeder will be honest and open about the health problems of the breed and the incidence with which they occur.

The Irish Red and White Setter have health problems that may be cause for concern, especially if the breeder is not carefully examined. Among them are hip dysplasia, eye problems such as cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism and an immune disorder called canine leukocyte adhesion deficiency (CLAD). A reputable breeder will be honest and open about health problems in the breed and the incidence with which they occur in their lines..

Do not buy a puppy from a breeder who cannot provide you with written documentation that the parents have been exempted from health issues affecting the breed. Having dogs โ€œvet checkedโ€ is no substitute for genetic health testing.

Inform your dog's breeder of any serious illness. If the breeders do not know that a health problem has appeared in their line, cannot take steps to eradicate it.

Grooming

The Irish Red and White Setter has a silky coat that removes dirt easily. Also loose hair, but in a moderate way. The coat should look natural and, except for the bottom of the feet, does not need to be shaved or trimmed.

Brush and comb the coat a couple of times a week - and whenever the dog has been in the field- taking care to gently remove any tangles or kills in the coat. Regular brushing will keep the coat clean, but you will need to bathe the dog from time to time if the white hair starts to get dirty.

The rest is basic care. Trim nails when necessary, usually every one to two weeks. Brush teeth frequently with a vet-approved pet toothpaste for overall good health and fresh breath.

Pont-Audemere Spaniel
Francia FCI 114 . Spaniel type

Pont-Audemere Spaniel

The Pont-Audemere Spaniel he is a gentle dog, very balanced and obedient. energetic, smart and loyal, they are easy to train.

Content

History

The Pont-Audemere Spaniel is originally from the Pont-Audemer region, looking for the Marais Vernier, in Normandy, where it is traditionally used for hunting waterfowl. In 1886, the Kennel Club of Le Havre began to select him. After the Second World War, only a few copies of this small brown spaniel remained and crosses were made with the Irish Water Spaniel to save the race.

The Pont-Audemere Spaniel It's very weird. The total population of the breed is about three hundred individuals in France. Some breeders perpetuate the breed, mainly in Normandy and Picardy.

It is usually cut in the third; when the tail is not cut, It should be of medium length, a little curved. Dark amber or hazelnut, the eyes are rather small. The upper part of the skull and the long ears are well provided with curlers that frame the head, giving the impression of wearing a wig.

Hair is slightly rough on the body, wavy, neither flat nor curly. The fur is brown, preferably brown and speckled gray, with reflections of dead leaves.

Height and weight

  • female size: Of 52 to 58 cm.
  • Male weight: Of 19 to 20 kg
  • female weight: Of 17 to 19 kg

Character and skills

The Pont-Audemere Spaniel is loving and displays unwavering loyalty to his masters. But, if they don't get their regular dose of care, these dogs can often get anxious, which is an important trait of his personality.

These dogs are especially good with children and are very sociable. They are also great playmates and family companions.. But, if you are looking for a good watchdog, it may not be the best option, as they are too friendly and quiet to keep an eye on something or someone.

This breed gets along very well with other dogs, but does not get along with dogs of the same breed that do not belong to the same pack or group. It is also not very friendly with other pets.. But, puppies of this breed mix easily with other pets and are known to have a friendly demeanor towards them.

Training and education

The training of the Pont-Audemere Spaniel It is easy. This dog is very obedient and loyal to the orders of the master. But, training sessions should be short, since the dog hates any long and repetitive task.

Exercise of Pont-Audemere Spaniel

This dog has aggressive exercise needs, which means that even long walks don't usually satisfy you. The most satisfaction you would get would be from any long hunting session. But, if hunting is not a reality, this dog should be allowed to romp in controlled areas so that it burns enough calories to meet its exercise requirements.

Health

Like the rest of the animals, this breed has health conditions to watch out for. canine hip dysplasia, a condition related to the hip cavities, can cause arthritis in dogs. These dogs are also prone to Von Willebrand's disease (a bleeding disease related to clotting), and hyperthyroidism (overproduction of hormones in the thyroid).

Apart from these problems, patella luxation and dental problems are the most common in this breed. alopecia, a skin disease caused by ringworm or other parasites, can also affect these dogs.

In summary, the following health problems are not uncommon in the breed Pont-Audemere Spaniel:

  • canine hip dysplasia
  • Von Willebrand disease
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Dental disease
  • Patella dislocation
  • Alopecia

Grooming

The fur and skin of these dogs may look like they need a lot of grooming, but in reality, this breed needs little to no maintenance. A regular brushing once or twice a week is all you need.

But, the dog's ears need to be cleaned whenever necessary and are at risk of infection if not kept clean.

Italian Spinone

Content

History

As the name suggests, the Italian Spinone -The ยซItalian emphasisยป – is originally from Italy, more specifically from the Piedmont region, in the north of the country. It is a very old breed of dog, and whoever searches for its exact origins will find more questions than answers. But, it is generally accepted that it is the result of various crosses over the centuries between Italian Setters, Griffons from France, White Mastiffs and Dogs of Greece.

There is evidence that their ancestors already hunted in the Alps and Apennines more than 2000 years. But, the first clear reference to the breed dates back to the Middle Ages, more specifically to the fifteenth century, in the form of a fresco by Andrea Montegna (1431-1506) inside the Ducal Palace of Mantua (Italy), which represents an Italian Spinone. Two centuries later, Jacques Espรฉe of Sรฉlincourt, evoca en su manual The Perfect Hunter (1683) an Italian Griffon from Piedmont.

Popular for centuries in Italy, the Spinone suffered greatly during WWII. The end of hostilities did not mean a notable improvement in their situation, as Italian hunters began to prefer breeds imported from abroad.

In 1949, The doctor. Paolo Branzi and Dr.. Ezio Caraffini founded La Famiglia dello Spinone -which has since become the Italian Spinoni Club- and they had 59 representatives of the breed throughout Italy. They chose 10 of them to start a breeding program aimed at rebuilding the population and stabilizing its characteristics. They drew up a first standard and contacted the Ente Nazionale della Cinofilia Italiana (ENCI), reference body of the country, to initiate the necessary procedures for the recognition of the breed.

His work paid off, so that in 1955 the Spinone Italiano was recognized by the Fรฉdรฉration Cynologique Internationale (FCI). Then it began to spread internationally, although it took a while, especially in North America. Thus, until 1995 el United Kennel Club (UKC) American did not grant him his recognition. The other reference organization in the United States, the American Kennel Club (AKC), did the same in 2000. The Canadian Kennel Club did the same in 2006.

In fact, although it is quite common in its country of origin and is the second most popular hunting dog in that country, its international distribution remains limited. But, is quite successful in Britain, where the Kennel Club registers between 400 and 500 births every year. This is far from the case in France.: with less than ten entries per year in the French Stud Book (LOF), it is clear that he is far from having conquered the hearts of French hunters.

In United States, AKC statistics put it around No. 110 (of 195) in the ranking of the most popular breeds in the country.

Physical characteristics

The Italian Spinone it's well built, with well-developed muscles and strong bones.

Her body, as high as long, is square in shape and ends in a thick bushy tail. The tail hangs at rest and is horizontal when in action. The legs are solid and end in compact round legs.

The head is egg-shaped, with a curved skull and a muzzle the same length as the skull. The color of the nose varies between the pink of white dogs and the brown of roan dogs.. The eyes are round, big and far apart. They are of a more or less dark ocher color. Triangular shape, the ears are rather long and fall along the cheeks.

The body of the Spinone is entirely covered with a stiff and dense fur, of about 4 to 6 cm long, that protects it when it slides through the undergrowth, but also when thrown into cold water. It is shorter at the top of the head and at the front of the legs. In the face, a dense coat of thick eyebrows and a full beard, typical of the breed, which also protects it from brambles and bushes. Beneath this top layer is the dog's fur, which has the peculiarity of not having undercoat.

The coat can be plain white, white with orange spots, chestnut or brown, or roan with orange spots, chestnut or brown. Tricolor or black-haired dogs are not accepted by the breed standard.

Last, sexual dimorphism is marked: the male is larger and above all significantly more massive than the female.

Size and weight

    Male size: Of 60 to 70 cm.
    female size: Of 58 to 65 cm.
    Male weight: Of 32 to 37 kg
    female weight: Of 28 to 30 kg

Character and skills

Generally easier to live with than other pointers, the Spinone Italianos they are affectionate and close to their family, they love to play and spend most of the time with them. Although they are hunters, They are not the kind that jump into the open sea and disappear as soon as potential prey catches their eye: they never stray too far from their master, preferring to always have it in sight.

Your affection, patience and playful character make them an ideal breed for a child. He loves children and is an excellent playmate for those old enough to have learned to behave in the presence of a dog. Less recommended for younger children, as it is large enough to inadvertently push them down. In any case, regardless of race, interactions between a dog and a young child should always take place in the presence of an adult.

The Italian griffon also it is sociable with other dogs Griffon, those who are often willingly adopted as playmates. Small animals, as cats, rabbits and other rodents, have more to worry about and are more likely to be hunted as potential prey. But, they may live with a cat if they have been raised with them, but the latter is likely to still be haunted in the garden from time to time.

As for humans who are unknown to him, the Spinone is generally cozy with them, especially if he's been well socialized from his early months. In fact, used to living with humans for centuries, is more of the type to actively seek their company. Also easily suffers from loneliness: although you can spend a few hours alone at home without difficulty, it is not advisable to leave it all for a weekend. Adopting an extra dog can be a good way to provide companionship to help you avoid loneliness when your family is away..

He is as active in the early years as he is calm and collected afterward.. This can be seen in his hunting style, that is calm and methodical.

Having said that, if you like to rest on the living room rug, this does not mean that you do not need to exercise. So that you feel comfortable and calm when you get home, your daily walks should total at least one hour. Although they are slower than other signaling breeds, they are very resistant and can adapt to many types of terrain. For this reason, if the opportunity arises to take a long walk of several hours, he is delighted. During the latter, does not tend to stray far from his master, so it can be walked without a leash. You can live in an apartment as long as you go out two or three times a day, but its size makes it unsuitable for a small studio.

He prefers a house with a garden where he can frolic and where he will gladly get rid of any unwanted critters. But, it is not convenient for you to live abroad: you need to be in contact with your family and should be able to spend as much time as possible with them.

On the other hand, It is an intelligent breed of dog that likes to be mentally stimulated. Rather stubborn and showing little interest in activities that seem pointless, needs a leader who offers motivating exercises. Obedience exercises, agility or hunting are a great way to get his attention and stimulate him. The rapport is also something instinctive in him, and you will not be asked to carry the ball or bat thrown by your master. He does not hesitate to do the same with the toys scattered around the house when he wants to show him that he wants to have fun.

It is also important to know that your beautiful beard gets wet every time you drink. He tends to pour water all over the house whenever he quenches his thirst, so it may be a good idea to put your bowl outside and not inside the house.

Last, although don't hesitate to bark when you see fit, the Italian Spinone it's not overly vocal.

Education

The Italian Spinone, like all dogs, must be socialized from an early age. It is important that you can meet all the people who are part of your close or distant environment (friends, neighbors, family…). You must also face all kinds of situations (walk through different places, meet other dogs or other animals, travel in different means of transport) not to be scared once an adult.

It shouldn't be long before they start learning to tame, which can be longer and more complicated than for most other breeds.

Given its size once adult, it is also useful to get him used to being handled without flinching from an early age, so that the grooming sessions are a moment of shared pleasure and not torture for both protagonists.

The Italian griffon he's smart and has a strong personality. You need a firm master who knows how to earn your respect, but even if I do, does not like to do tasks that seem trivial. It's a working dog, who likes to be useful and prefers to learn, for example, to recover the game before turning around. In fact, if your master knows how to do it and has all the necessary patience, this dog can do wonders, even in obedience and agility competitions. The trick is to motivate you, above all making him understand the interest of the command.

Not surprisingly, it responds much better to positive reinforcement-based dog training methods than traditional dog training.. Know that the fulfillment of what is asked allows you to receive caresses, encouragement and treats is, in his eyes, a legitimate reason to improve himself and give the best of himself.

Health

The Italian Spinone is generally quite robust. Apart from the health problems common to all large dogs and a serious genetic disease, but fortunately in the process of disappearance thanks to the work of the breeders, the risks are low.

Like this, the conditions to which you are especially exposed are :

  • La ataxia cerebelosa, a genetic disease that attacks the cerebellum and is the most critical health problem in this breed. Puppies that have received a carrier gene from both parents die before their first birthday. But, nowadays it is extremely rare, since carrier individuals are eliminated from breeding programs. A breeder of Spinone worthy of the name must be able to show that parents are not carriers, based on test results;
  • Hip and elbow dysplasia, joint problems that make movement difficult;
    gastric dilation-torsion, often related to too fast a food intake, which can be fatal without prompt veterinary intervention;
  • Entropion and ectropion, eyelid malformations that can be corrected surgically if problematic;
    Hypothyroidism, a hormonal deficiency that causes a slowdown in bodily functions;
  • Cancer (bone, liver, base…), which according to a joint study by the British Kennel Club and the British Small Animal Veterinary Association is, with difference, the main cause of mortality in this breed, with a 45% of deaths.

It also, the drooping and hairy ears of the Spinone they get dirty easily. They can become infected quickly if they are not cleaned every week and after each bath.

Despite its lack of undercoat and its Italian origins, it adapts quite well to different climates and is resistant to both heat and cold, but extreme temperatures are hard to bear. A shelter is necessary so that you can be in the shade when the thermometer exceeds 30 ยฐ, and doesn't particularly appreciate spending the night outside when it's -10ยฐ.

Last, the Italian griffon not very prone to obesity, especially if you have enough opportunity to exercise. But, a responsible handler should regularly make sure that everything is in order by taking the time to weigh your dog.

Life expectancy

Of 12 to 13 years

Grooming

The maintenance of Italian Spinone is simple, but it requires some discipline, as it can be difficult and time consuming if not done regularly.

The absence of undercoat means that you only lose a small amount of hair. A weekly brushing is enough to remove dirt, remove dead hairs and untangle knots from their fur. The most frequent molt is not necessarily necessary during the fall and spring, since the lack of undercoat makes the shedding not very pronounced. On the other hand, If you "forget" one or two toilet sessions, the situation is complicated: debris accumulates and knots form that can no longer be untangled with the brush. Then there is no choice but to undo them manually or even cut them with a chisel. Depending on the state of the coat, this can sometimes take more than an hour.

In any case, rarely need a bath, unless it is especially dirty or smelly after a trip. Except for exceptions, two or three bathrooms a year are more than enough, and a mild dog shampoo should be used each time.

Weekly grooming sessions are also an opportunity to wipe your dog's eyes and brush his teeth.. Neither should you neglect the care of the ears: hanging and furry ears tend to catch dirt, so the risk of infection is high. They can be cleaned with a damp cloth.

It also, beard tends to trap moisture and becomes smelly. Thus, should be towel dried often and cleaned from time to time.

Last, if you spend a lot of time outdoors, wear and tear is usually enough to file the claws of the Italian Spinone, that grow faster than those of most other dogs. If they become too long and may bother or hurt you, must be trimmed with a special nail clipper.

Use

The Italian Spinone it is above all a hunting dog, a mission that has been fulfilling for centuries and in which it stands out. Your ability to point methodically, making game disappear and recover makes them very versatile hunting dogs. This is all the more true since, how your name illustrates, derived from the Italian word for bramble, are able to sneak into the thorniest thickets in search of small game. It is also very resistant.

When not used for hunting, can be used to show off their qualities in various dog sports, like agility or obedience. They are also good watchdogs, but their lack of aggressiveness and the fact that they bark very little disqualifies them as guardians. Having said that, It's impressive enough that most hackers will pass on it..

Last, the Italian griffon He is also a wonderful companion dog., loving and totally devoted to his family. It can be the ideal companion for an active owner who wants to always have his dog by his side when going for a walk or hiking.

Price

The price of a puppy Italian Spinone is of some 800 to 1000 euros in Europe. In Canada and the United States, is usually between 1500 and 1800 $.

In all cases, there is no noticeable price difference between males and females.

Brittany Spaniel
Francia FCI 95 . Spaniel type

Spaniel Bretรณn

The Brittany Spaniel They are multi-faceted "Pointer Dogs", for all types of hunting and all-terrain.

Content

History

The Brittany Spaniel It, as the name reflects, originally from the Breton region, in the extreme west of France. It is probably one of the races Spaniel type and oldest โ€œShow Dogsโ€ in the country.

Some historians argue that it was developed a long time ago, about 150 years AD. In any case, the first traces of white and red dogs that resembled him and were undoubtedly the ancestors of the current Brittany Spaniel date back to 17th century tapestries and paintings. The dogs in question are represented hunting.

The most likely hypothesis is that the development of the breed began in the 18th century, but there is relatively little data on its exact origins. But, Specialists believe it probably originated from the "Welsh Springer Spaniel.", the English Setter and several breeds of "French Spaniel". The first representatives of the breed were surely born in the village of Ponthou, located in the department of Finistรจre, and are most likely the result of the first crosses between the "Welsh Springer Spaniel" and "French dogs.".

During the 19th century, in the city of Callac and its surroundings (Cรดtes-d'Armor department), the dogs thus created were crossed with the English Setter. The city then specialized in breeding the dogs resulting from these crosses., and today it is considered the capital of Brittany Spaniel.

There are several theories about the exact development of the breed, including how the English Setter used for breeding. One of the theories is that they belonged to British families who spent their holidays in Brittany., while according to another they were brought by hunters of the same nationality who came to hunt in the region.

About 1850, Reverend E. W. Davies, Anglican writer, minister and hunter who liked to spend winters hunting in the Breton region, mentioned in his writings a medium-sized hunting dog, type Pointer, with short tail. This was definitely the Brittany Spaniel as we know it today, since this short or even absent tail, due to an English ancestor who introduced the corresponding gene into the bloodlines, it is one of the peculiarities of the breed.

From the beginning of its development, the Brittany Spaniel was bred as both a pointer and a collection dog, regardless of time. In fact, was (and it still being) very adaptable, which allowed it to spread later in many French regions, as well as in several European countries, like the UK. French breeders, However, they predisposed him to hunt birds.

Used to working in collaboration with man and eager to please him, the Brittany Spaniel he was not only at the service of hunters, but also integrated into their homes. When i wasn't working, voluntarily stayed with their masters in their homes. His reputation as a good pet was quickly established.

Dog shows also played an important role, as they allowed the breed to become known outside their homeland. In fact, the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th were marked by an important development of these events in Great Britain and other European countries, especially in France.

The year 1907 marked the creation of the Club l’ร‰pagneul Breton ร  courte queue naturelle. Next, a first draft of the breed standard was written, which was adopted at the first plenary meeting of the association the following year in Loudรฉac. It was later modified into 1923 and again in 1933, 1956, 1995, 2001 and 2003.

As with many races, World War II marked the end of the breeding of Brittany Spaniels. Then it suffered a certain decline, However, it could be compensated once the conflict ended thanks to the work of the breeders and the evolution of certain rules.. In effect, as the gene pool of the breed had become too small throughout Europe, it was decided to accept individuals with black spots, what did not happen until then.

The problem did not arise in the United States and Canada, so local organizations did not follow the example of their French counterparts, British and others. The situation has not changed since then: this particularity is still not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC), el United Kennel Club (UKC) and the Canadian Kennel Club (CCC).

The popularity of the ยซBreton Spanielยป

in your country of origin, the Brittany Spaniel It is very much appreciated, and its popularity has not waned over the decades. Like this, the number of new annual registrations at the Sociรฉtรฉ Centrale Canine (SCC) has never been below 4.000 since the middle of the years 70, and most of the time it even exceeds the 5.000. But, there has been a certain decline over the years 2010, in which the number of new registrations has dropped from almost 5.500 a year at about 4.500.

The Brittany Spaniel It is the only "French Spaniel" that is also very popular outside its country. Official recognition of the breed by the Fรฉdรฉration Cynologique Internationale (FCI) in 1954 obviously contributed to it.

He did not wait for the FCI to gain a foothold in the United States, where their first representatives arrived in 1931. Crossing with other "Setter" type dogs caused the breed to gain in size and muscularity., thus deviating from the original model. In fact, there is now a clear physical distinction between the American and French types, beyond the possible presence of black spots on the latter.

The Brittany Spaniel was recognized already in 1934 by the AKC under the name of Brittany Spaniel, then the latter was shortened to 1982 in favor of the simple denomination Brittany. In fact, both in Europe and America, This dog probably has more in common with Pointers than Spaniels.. It is the same choice made by the other reference organization in the country, the UKC, when he also accepted the breed in 1948, again with the simple name of Breton. The UKC has the particularity of being the only organization that recognizes both types of Brittany Spaniel like two different races. In fact, seeing how ยซBrittanyยป American had ended up diverging from his French ancestor, decided on 2002 also recognize the "French type" as a breed in its own right, with the name it bears in its country of origin.

But, This quick recognition should not obscure the fact that the lack of a tail was initially a major disruption to American hunters., so the Brittany Spaniel it took him a while to gain a foothold in the country. But, the general qualities of the breed eventually overcame this reluctance and the breed became very popular. Although it was also used as a hunting dog, its qualities as a companion dog, starting with his medium size and good character, also contributed greatly to its success. this last one is real, since it occupies around the post 25 (of something less than 200) in the breed ranking established by the AKC based on the number of annual births registered with the organization. This is even an improvement over the first decade of the 21st century., when he was around the post 30.

Also in North America, the Canadian CKC also recognizes the breed, and is quite appreciated in the country.
Closer to France, Great Britain contributed to the genesis of the breed thanks to the "Welsh Springer Spaniel" and the English Setter, and adopted her in turn, being their representatives used both for hunting and shows as well as for the company. But, its inhabitants seem to have subsequently moved away from it. Like this, was not up 1975 when the Kennel Club, the canine organization of reference in the country, recognized the Brittany Spaniel. Regarding the number of subjects enrolled each year, we cannot say that it reflects a great fondness for this dog, since it is below a hundred. This figure is even on the decline, since in the first semester of 2010 it was rather between 100 and 150.

But, other European countries have given it a much better reception. This is the case, in particular, of Italy, where hunting is very popular and widely practiced. This is, without a doubt, one of the reasons why, at the beginning of 2010, ranked 5th in the ranking of the most represented dogs in the country, based on the number of annual registrations in the Ente Nazionale Cinofilia Italiana (ENCI). But, since then the number has dropped steadily; now it is more or less around the 3.000, which is still considerable.

Worldwide, a classification established in 2013 and based on the sum of the annual registration statistics of 25 national organizations among the hundred members of the FCI places the Brittany Spaniel in the post 30, which confirms to what extent it has been able to gain a foothold around the world.

Physical characteristics

The Brittany Spaniel It is one of the smallest "Show Dogs" in the world, but it is longer than most "Spaniel Type" dogs. They are of the braccoid type, muscular and agile, quite high-legged and with a compact silhouette. They are distinguished from the "Pointer" type dogs by their head, typical of the ยซSpanielยป, and the frequent absence of tail.

straight and stiff, his back is generally as long as his height at the withers. The chest generally descends to the tips of the elbows, while the shoulders are long and very mobile.

Due to a genetic mutation introduced in the 19th century, the tail of Brittany Spaniel is absent or very short. When it is present, It is located in the upper part of the croup and usually measures between 3 and 6 cm., but the breed standard accepts up to 10 cm.. There was a time when the use of tail docking was common for dogs with a tail that was too long for their owner's liking. But, this practice is now banned in a large number of countries, like belgium, France, Switzerland and Quebec.

As for the legs, they are long and strong, and have flexible joints that allow them to run lightly without much effort. The feet are usually larger on the hind legs than on the front legs.. In all cases, they are well rounded, compact and have tight toes.

The head of the Brittany Spaniel rests on a moderately long neck, fine and strong. Whether viewed from the side or from the front, the skull is somewhat rounded. The stop is quite well defined. It also, this dog is slightly brachycephalic, which means that its muzzle is shorter than its skull. It ends in a nose with wide nostrils whose color corresponds to that of the fur, and tame scissor bite jaws.

Located on the top of the head and provided with semi-long hairs, sometimes wavy at the top, the ears are wide, short, triangles and falls. They are extremely mobile when you are on the lookout for something.
The eyes are slightly oblique and their color usually corresponds to the predominant color of the coat. His intelligent gaze shows the great alertness of this dog.

If there is no undercoat, the mantle of Brittany Spaniel consists simply of a thin layer of medium length hair, which is not very thick and can be smooth or slightly wavy. Most common color is fawn on white, but there are also brown and white dogs, fire and tricolor (black, Orange and white, or brown, Orange and white). Confidentially, the latter has gained in popularity in recent times. As for the black and white fur, there is debate: accepted by some organizations, as the Fรฉdรฉration Cynologique Internationale (FCI), but others reject it, as the American Kennel Club (AKC) or the Canadian Kennel Club (CCC). In any case, regardless of its color, some individuals have spots on the snout, the lips, around the eyes, on the legs or even on the chest.

Last, It should be noted that there are two very different types: the Brittany Spaniel French type and the Brittany Spaniel american type. They differ mainly by their size: the second (the most represented in the United States and Canada) it is bigger and more massive than the first (majority in Europe). As to the nature, tends to be more active and awake. These differences are explained by the fact that the first representatives of the breed imported to the United States in the decade of 1930 They were quickly crossed with "Setter" type dogs.

Whatever the type, there is only a very slight sexual dimorphism between males and females, although the former may be a bit larger and heavier. It also, regardless of gender, representatives of the breed reach their adult size between 14 and 16 months of age.

Height and weight

▷ Male size: Of 49 to 50 cm.

▷ female size: Of 48 to 49 cm.

▷ Male weight: Of 14 to 16 kg

▷ female weight: Of 13 to 16 kg

Varieties:

Although not strictly varieties, there are two types of Brittany Spaniel: the original French type and the American type, that appeared after the breed's arrival in the United States in the years 30 and their crossing with local Setters. This resulted in a larger dog, stronger and faster with a livelier temper.

Smaller and more compact, the Brittany Spaniel French type is easier to train and handle during hunting parties.
These two types can also be differentiated by their fur. The Brittany Spaniel American type has no black spots, unlike his cousin. It also, they tend to have shorter hairs.

El United Kennel Club (UKC) American is the only organization that recognizes these two types as distinct breeds. In 1948, the Brittany Spaniel was recognized as Brittany. Arrived in the country less than 20 years before, this dog was still broadly identical to the one found in France. But, as the gap widened over the decades, The breed finally decided that the "Brittany" corresponds to the Brittany Spaniel american type, and in 2002 decided to also recognize his ancestor, the french type, under the name of Brittany Spaniel.

Character and skills

The Brittany Spaniel it is one of the most popular dog breeds in France, and even to a certain extent the world. In effect, is sociable, Intelligent, attentive and cheerful. With the, it seems impossible to get bored and in a bad mood, so contagious is his joy of living!

Having said that, as it happens with many races, the temperament of this dog can vary according to sex. For an individual destined for hunting, a sterile male is often preferred, as it is considered calmer and more gentle than an uncastrated female or male.

In any case, it is a joy for the whole family, And he gets along especially well with children.. He loves to play actively with them and can be quite protective if he perceives a threat to them. But, his boundless energy and enthusiasm can lead him to unintentionally push or even knock over a small child. In any case, as with any dog, should never be left alone with a very young child without adult supervision, and those whose age allows it must learn to behave with respect towards him.

Loyal to his family and little tolerant of loneliness, this dog requires a lot of presence and affection to feel good: if he is left alone too long or does not receive enough attention from his masters, can quickly develop destructive behavior or bark excessively. Its need for attention and interaction also means that it is not suitable for a household where members are often away for long periods of time..

Sharing your home with another little companion is an interesting option to help you pass the time when your caregivers are away. In fact, the Brittany Spaniel not only appreciates humans: he is also very sociable with his peers, whether you come across them on walks or those you would have to deal with on a daily basis. He is also grateful that he is not the only dog โ€‹โ€‹in the family.. You can also plan a coexistence with a cat, as soon as I am in contact with him from a very young age. On the other hand, when he meets an unknown feline, you probably want to go after him. Good socialization is not enough for you to live under the same roof as a small prey-like animal, like a rodent or a bird. In fact, hunting instinct is in his genes and he is likely to regain the upper hand at any moment, ending this coexistence prematurely.

Their propensity to hunt small animals that pass by, as well as his permanent desire to run, also implies that if you live in a house with a garden, this must be well fenced, at the risk of sometimes going too far. A property with a large fenced area is the ideal environment for him, but it is quite adaptable. So, as long as your need for exercise is met each day with the help of long walks and other activities, you can even live in an apartment and in an urban environment.

But, keep in mind that they can be sensitive to noise. So, can get stressed out when your home is particularly noisy, for example, by very noisy children. The same type of problem can arise if you live in the city or move regularly (for example, when walking) in a very crowded environment, especially if you haven't gotten used to it from a very young. On the other hand, used since its inception for hunting, he is indifferent to the noise of rifle shots.

Although they live in the quiet countryside and have access to a very large garden at all times, this is not enough for this particularly active and hardy dog รขโ‚ฌโ€นรขโ‚ฌโ€นto be comfortable with his head and paws. To be able to expend his great energy, needs at least an hour or two of daily activity. It's not about being much less active during the week and trying to make up for it on the weekend.: if this dog does not expend enough energy each day, can quickly develop behavior disorders, such as excessive nervousness or hyperactivity.

Given your level of activity, it is easy to understand that the Brittany Spaniel it is not at all adapted to elderly or very homey people. On the other hand, he is the best friend of an active master who likes to run, hiking or taking long bike rides and dreams of taking his animal with him. Knowing that he also likes to swim, do not hesitate to take him swimming in a lake from time to time, or in planning a swim break when there is a water point along the way during any activity. It can also be very good at practicing canine sports such as cani-cross or cani-VTT. In fact, usually always willing to do any activity that involves exercise, especially if it is fun or is accompanied by other dogs.

During the walks, It is important to bear in mind that at any time you can run after a bird or any other animal that is in your way, or you can be tempted by a smell that will not leave you indifferent. Your determination and stamina can go a long way, even to get lost. To avoid this, the most effective solution is, of course, always carry him on a leash, but this is by no means ideal for your well-being, as he urgently needs to vent. So, it is better to put the emphasis on learning to withdraw, considering that it is impossible to completely trust such a dog: Investing in a connected dog collar is a good way to prevent walks from being a source of anxiety, since then it is possible to know where it is at all times.

But, it is not enough to give him physical exercise to keep him balanced: you also have to keep him mentally busy. So, the ideal is to keep him mentally occupied with activities that appeal to his intelligence, like certain canine disciplines (obedience, agility or flyball, for example), o solving puzzles and other problems. As a working dog, he likes his owner to assign him tasks, and usually takes them very seriously.

This is all the more true as his closeness to his caregiver, her desire to please him and her intelligence make the Brittany Spaniel an easy to train dog that learns very quickly. They are especially attentive to the orders of their owner, attentive to every facial expression and ready to react and respond to any request.

Unlike other races, the Brittany Spaniel are not particularly destructive or difficult during their adolescence, which starts around 6 months and continues until 18 months of age. Even if you start to adopt undesirable behavior, his great desire to please makes him very easy to correct.

Last, because of his personality, not very assertive by nature, not a good watchdog, although it can be protective in especially threatening situations. He does not hesitate to bark to warn of the arrival of a stranger, but it is not usually the kind that does much more to deter the intruder. They can also be especially loud barking at the top of their lungs when they are home alone.. He has a groan that is his own and that he can also show when he is in this situation, or when scared or intrigued.

Education

The education of Brittany Spaniel it's pretty easy, because it is an obedient dog that likes above all to please its master. Thus, not the type to use his intelligence to try to exploit loopholes and challenge his master's dominance, but it allows you to learn very quickly. This makes it a recommended dog breed for a beginner..

With the, sweetness is the key word. In fact, is sensible, does not support violence and is not at all receptive to education based on punishment or negative reinforcement. If these methods are used, is likely to show signs of anxiety and stress at work. Positive reinforcement, that is to say, a work method based on the assessment of good behavior through rewards (petting, stimuli, candies…) is much more effective and allows you to feel real pleasure from your work.

Hunting individuals can quickly learn their future role. In effect, the Brittany Spaniel has a great hunting instinct, to the point that it is not uncommon to see a cub that begins hunting from the 3 months of age. It is possible to take your dog hunting from the 5 months of age. Obviously, it is not at that moment when he catches his first woodcock, but it allows you to become familiar with the environment and hunting. It is important, However, stick to short games and be fairly sure to watch the game, so as not to demotivate him. It also, being still growing and being fragile, avoid trying too hard. Only when it reaches its adult size, between 14 and 16 months, you can fully participate in this activity.

Although not intended for hunting, any activity that reinforces their persecution instinct should be prohibited in their education. Obviously, this should not detract from your need to be active and exercise properly. The learning and regular practice of a dog sport, like agility, obedience or flyball, for example, is a good alternative, although it can also be practiced perfectly by an individual employed as a hunter.

Teaching your dog to remember is also helpful in preventing him from unleashing his predatory instincts in inappropriate circumstances.. But, since even well-trained dogs are difficult to trust completely, the leash is more or less often essential for your safety and that of the animals and people around you. So, learning to walk on a leash is another important aspect of your education.

Last, like any dog, the Brittany Spaniel should benefit from great socialization from a young age, especially as you can tend to be suspicious and shy around strangers, or being especially stressed when in a noisy environment. Getting used from a young age to meet all kinds of people and fellow humans, but also to live in different places and to face a great variety of situations and stimuli (noises, smells, etc.), we give you all the possibilities to make you feel good in your head, calm down and easily find your place with humans.

Use

The Brittany Spaniel was developed to be a versatile hunter. remarkable in search, the signaling and collection (both in water and on land), is specialized in hunting birds (especially the woodcock and the duck), acts alone and not in a pack and continues to be, Still today, the hunting dog breed preferred by many hunters.
From the beginning of its history, has also found its place in the homes of its owners, thanks to his friendly personality and his natural closeness to man.

Today, It is still appreciated as a companion dog and is an excellent choice for anyone who is active and available., hunter or not, wanting nothing better than hiking with your dog or taking it with you when you go for a run or ride a bike.

your energy, his resistance and his desire to please also make him a perfect student for many canine disciplines such as agility, the flyball, obedience, the cani-cross or the mountain bike.

Grooming

Due to her very moderate hair loss throughout the year, its lack of undercoat and its little tendency to tangle, the fur of the Brittany Spaniel requires little maintenance: a weekly brushing is enough. Your seasonal shed, in spring and autumn, it is not very pronounced, but still requires more regular brushing, on the order of 2 or 3 times per week.

It is also possible to take the dog to the groomer to cut the medium hairs of the legs (or do it yourself), to avoid knots, since this part of the body is especially prone to them. But, this is not essential: depends on the preferences of each caregiver.

How their coat is generally kept clean, it is not necessary to bathe the dog more than 2 or 3 times a year. In any case, unless it got especially dirty, avoid bathing him too close, as it could seriously damage the skin or fur. In any case, it is important to always use a shampoo specially designed for dogs, since the pH of human skin and that of your best friend are different.

The drooping shape of the ears of the Brittany Spaniel implies an increased risk of infections at this level (otitis, etc.), as it facilitates the accumulation of dirt and moisture. So, it is essential to examine and clean them weekly, as well as dry them after each prolonged moment in a humid place, and of course every time you swim.

The weekly maintenance session is also an opportunity to check the condition of your partner's eyes and clean the contours. This also greatly reduces the risk of infection. This is all the more important since the Brittany Spaniel is quite sensitive to the eyes and can have a number of eye diseases: the sooner they are detected, best.

Caring for a Brittany Spaniel it also involves taking care of your teeth, always using a toothpaste specially designed for dogs. This helps limit the build-up of dental plaque., which can lead to tartar formation, which can be the cause of many problems, some of which are potentially serious. The ideal is daily brushing and, in any case, it is better to avoid brushing less than once a week.

Last, the activity level of this hyperactive dog causes claw wear to occur normally naturally. So, they rarely need to be cut, unless, for example, your mobility is limited by a health problem. If you hear them rubbing when you walk on the hard ground, it's time to take care of them. Otherwise, they could hamper your movements or even break and injure you.

As with any race, the steps to take care of a Brittany Spaniel (either its fur, his eyes, his ears, their teeth or claws) should not be taken at random. In fact, beyond the risk of being ineffective, could hurt or even injure you. So, it is wise to see a vet or professional groomer the first time, to learn from him the best way to proceed. The sooner the animal gets used to these different manipulations, it will be easier for you to let them do it throughout your life. The sessions can then be beautiful moments of sweetness and complicity, instead of being tests feared by the two protagonists.

Another habit to take - and that also leads to manipulation- is to systematically examine your body when you return from every long moment you spend outdoors, in particular its fur, its feet and its pads. This ensures that you have not been injured, nor has he caught spikes or parasites.

Health

In general, the Brittany Spaniel enjoys robust health, which is illustrated by the fact that a good number of representatives of the breed are celebrating their 15th birthday.

It also, his Breton origins mean that bad weather does not impress him or prevent him from carrying out his outdoor activities. It is also capable of adapting to many weather conditions, even at extreme temperatures.

But, like all dogs, have a predisposition to develop certain diseases, many of which are hereditary:

  • Hip Dysplasia, a potentially inherited joint malformation that mostly affects medium and large dogs. Causes pain and lameness to a greater or lesser extent, as well as osteoarthritis from a certain age;
  • Cleft palate, a congenital and often inherited malformation responsible for poor communication between the puppy's mouth and nose. Then you may suffer from feeding difficulties, swallowing problems, choking or coughing. Difficulty feeding can lead to stunted growth and requires surgery to correct the problem;
  • Spinal muscular atrophy, a sometimes hereditary syndrome that causes a decrease in muscle mass. This can cause, among other things, difficulty moving, breathing problems or trouble eating properly. It is a progressive and often fatal disease for which there is no treatment;
  • La abiotrofia cerebelosa, a disease that causes tremors and a significant loss of coordination, that affects young men more. These symptoms initially occur only when the animal is in motion, and then they get worse over time, more or less quickly, until they appear when idle. There is no treatment for this rare disease, but it is not painful for the animal;
  • Epilepsy, a sometimes inherited disease causing more or less severe and often impressive seizures. Various treatments allow limiting or even eliminating them, so that, usually, those affected continue to lead an almost normal life;
  • Hypothyroidism, an endocrine disruption that corresponds to a defect in the regulation of thyroid hormones. You can have all kinds of symptoms: weight gain, decreased heart rate, dry skin, hair loss, increased sensitivity to cold.;
  • Hemophilia, an incurable inherited disease that causes a deficiency in coagulation and, Therefore, excessive bleeding. They can appear mostly under the skin, during tooth growth, in urine and feces, during vaccination or when the animal is injured. They can also be internal and invisible, and often lead to death;
  • Lupus erythematosus, a skin disease resulting from a deficiency of the immune system, what causes, among other things, depigmentation of certain parts of the body (nose first, then the ears and legs), erosions and ulcers ;
    external otitis, due to the drooping shape of their ears.

The Brittany Spaniel it is also predisposed to certain eye diseases:

  • Dislocation of the lens, causing instability and abnormal movement of the lens in the eye. In this breed, most often it is the result of hereditary transmission. Very painful, can lead to total loss of sight if not treated with surgery;
  • The waterfall, a potentially inherited eye disease that usually develops in old age. Cataracts cause a cloudy lens that gradually reduces the dog's vision until total blindness occurs. Can be treated by surgery;
  • Glaucoma, an often inherited disease that can cause sudden loss of vision. It is the result of an abnormal increase in pressure in the dog's eye and must be treated quickly, otherwise its consequences are irreversible.

It also, specimens used for hunting are at increased risk of injury, parasites and spikes.

Last, despite its high level of activity, the Brittany Spaniel does not get rid of obesity, that can cause or accentuate many health problems. It is also a vicious circle, since an overweight individual tends to be less active.

But, the long list of diseases to which the breed is predisposed should not obscure the fact that most of its representatives spend most of their lives in perfect health. This is confirmed by a study carried out in 2004 by the British Kennel Club and the British Small Animal Veterinary Association, which established that the leading cause of death in this breed is simply advanced age.

On the other hand, this list leads to many inherited conditions, or that are likely to be hereditary. This underlines how important it is to go to a serious and competent Brittany Spaniel breeder who rigorously selects his breeders.. If you are unable to present the results of the genetic tests carried out on the parents or offspring to prevent any transmission of said disease, it is better to go your way and go to another breeder; no lack of options. In addition to these documents, any serious professional should be able to provide a certificate from a veterinarian proving that the puppy is in good health, as well as your health or vaccination card, confirm that you have received all necessary vaccinations.

Adopting a healthy animal is one thing, but its usefulness is limited if you don't make sure it stays that way. So, it is essential to note that, until the age of 14 to 16 months, a puppy of Brittany Spaniel is still in its growth phase, and therefore is particularly fragile. Throughout this period, it is important to only very gradually increase the duration and intensity of your activities, at the risk of impairing the proper development of your bones and joints, or even causing injuries and/or malformations that he could suffer throughout his life. This is all the more important since you are predisposed to hip dysplasia.

Last, one of the best ways to keep your dog healthy is to take him to the vet at least once a year for a thorough check-up to detect any possible problems, which may not be visible to the inexperienced eye. It is also a great opportunity to take stock of vaccinations and any necessary withdrawals.. It also, antiparasitic treatments also help protect your pet against a number of diseases: it is up to the owner to renew them throughout the year, whenever necessary.

History

The Serbian tricolour hound (Srpski Trobojni Goniฤ or Trobojac) It is considered one of the rarest species that exist. This breed is one of the three types of dogs developed in the former Yugoslavia. Before the disintegration of Yugoslavia, The breed was known as the "Yugoslav Tricolor Hound", changing its name in 1991 after the dissolution of Yugoslavia.

In 1946 It was debated whether this race was independent or just a variety of the ยซSerbian houndยซ; finally given separate breed status and a first standard set. This breed was presented at the International Dog Show in Belgrade on 7 and 8 in June of 1950. The Serbian tricolour hound was recognized as a breed by the FCI the 25 in July of 1961 and the standard was published.

From the beginning, these dogs have been used as hunting companions. They are ruthless hunters of small game like foxes and rabbits. Due to his strength and fearless nature, they are also used to hunt wild boar, wild boars and other game animals. Unlike other Hounds that hunt on a leash, this breed can run freely and search for prey on its own. This independent hunter will never kneel in the face of difficult terrain. In search of prey, uses your excellent sense of smell, and with a penetrating voice will inform the hunter when he finds it.

Unfortunately, this persistent and tireless hunter is not known among hunting enthusiasts in other countries, so this rare breed is relatively unknown in other parts of the world.

Physical characteristics ยซSerbian tricolor houndยป

All three Yugoslav dog breeds evolved from Phoenician merchant dogs and have almost identical characteristics, which is why they are often mistakenly identified as the same race. What distinguishes the Serbian tricolour hound of the other two races is the white mark on the chest, which emphasizes the striking print of dark red hair in the background and a black cloak.

The coat of the Serbian tricolour hound it is waterproof, short and bright. Slightly thick with a well developed undercoat, spreads well throughout the body. Both in the area of รขโ‚ฌโ€นรขโ‚ฌโ€นthe rear thigh and in the lower part of the tail the coat is slightly elongated.

The coat of the Serbian tricolour hound has a deep red or fox red background color, of which a saddle or black fur stands out. The black partly reaches the head of the dog and forms two dark marks on the temples. White forms a full or partial collar under or around the neck.

On the dog's head white is pronounced like a cutout. On the muzzle it can also be seen as a spread fire. If the dog has a white mark on its chest, this is permissible, although it extends to the end of the sternum and reaches both the belly and the interior of the hind limbs.

The tip of the tail can also be completely white. But, total white coat should be less than one third of total body. The Serbian tricolour hound also has medium length ears, high, found near the cheeks.

The height the male will of 45 to 55 cm and in the female of 44 to 54 cm., the weight of Serbian tricolour hound will of 20 to 25 kg.

The life expectancy of the Serbian tricolour hound, round the 12 years.

Character and aptitudes ยซSerbian tricolor houndยป

The breed is characterized by an intense temperament, always reliable and very loyal in his relationship with his pack. But, the Serbian tricolour hound also has a very friendly nature. On the one hand, dogs are suitable as watchdogs. On the other hand, can be used for dressage.

The Serbian tricolour hound is hard-working and optimally equipped to work even on difficult terrain. Due to its attentive and excellent eyes and its high performance, is an ideal hunting dog.

At home he behaves warmly and calmly. But, as soon as it is in working mode, is extremely energetic and very persistent.

If you get a Serbian tricolour hound, you will get a breed that will be a friendly and obedient companion dog. He always tries to please his owner. But, the prerequisite for this is that it is sufficiently busy when not used for hunting.

Norwegian Hound (Dunker)
Noruega FCI 203 - Medium-sized Hounds

Norwegian Hound

The Norwegian Hound (Dunker) is found only in its country of origin and is virtually unknown outside its borders.

History

The Norwegian Hound was originally called Dunker, in honor of the Norwegian captain and breeder Wilhelm Conrad Dunker (1806-1860), who established the first breed standard in 1850. During the first half of the 19th century, there was a large population of hounds in norway, including various types used for hare hunting. Wilhelm Dunker selected those with the keenest sense of smell and crossed them with a Russian Harlequin Hound to produce a versatile hound, able to hunt rabbits and hares by smell rather than sight, and tough enough to withstand the harsh weather conditions of Norway.

In 1902 was founded the Norsk Harehundklub, a club dedicated to hounds. That same year the hounds were divided into two main groups, known today as Dunker y Hygenhounds. The first was the most numerous and included local dogs from all over the country., providing a wide and varied breeding base.

Although Norway was less affected by World War II than other European countries, the demand for these dogs dropped dramatically, which made it difficult for the breeders to continue their work properly. As a result, the number of specimens decreased significantly.

After the conflict is over, the Dunker regained some popularity and was officially recognized by the Fรฉdรฉration Cynologique Internationale (FCI) in 1956.

But, this bounce was only short lived: lost ground again from the decade of 1970, due to competition from foreign breeds of hunting dogs imported into the country.

Things did not improve much in the 80, to the point that inbreeding problems began to appear. In fact, the decline in its population led many breeders to resort to inbreeding to continue breeding. This led to a high rate of congenital deafness.. For this reason, in 1987, the breeding committee Norwegian Hound asked the Norsk Kennel Klubb (NKK), the reference canine organization in Norway, permission to cross the Dunker with other races, but they denied it. But, how things did not improve much, the NKK finally gave his approval for some crosses two years later. This resulted in a more varied and healthy genetic makeup, while maintaining the characteristic traits of the breed.

The United Kennel Club (UKC) recognized it in 1996. But, the other American reference organization, the American Kennel Club (AKC), has not done the same to this day – nor does the neighboring Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) or the prestigious British Kennel Club (KC). In fact, at the global level, recognition of the breed is still quite partial.

It's the same for broadcast. Even in the other Scandinavian countries, is almost absent, with the exception of Sweden, where the Svenska Kennelklubben records a number of births each year that can be counted on the fingers of one hand, compared to around twenty in the early nineties. In France, not a single entry was made in the Book of French Origins (LOF) during the first two decades of the 21st century.

In Norway, The number of Dunkers recorded each year in the NKK has been around 150 since the mid-decade 2000. But, this marks a halving of the number compared to the change in years 90. This limited number is partly explained by the deafness problem present in this breed.: almost the 75% of its population suffers from deafness.

Physical characteristics ยซNorwegian hound (Dunker)ยป

The Norwegian Hound It is a medium-sized dog distinguished by its long, well-proportioned body, his energetic and clear walk and his light weight. They have solid bones, giving an impression of strength and endurance. The back is straight, firm and long enough to give length to the rib cage. Lets on strong, dry front legs. The tail is wide and thick at the base and tapers at the tip. Descends to the hock or slightly protrudes from the hock.

Dunker
Dunker

Quite long, its head is characterized by a slightly domed skull and a marked stop. Located at half height, the ears are flat, without folds, hanging and soft to the touch. medium width, taper towards its tip, which is rounded. Its mouth has scissor-shaped teeth dominated by a square, well-developed snout., a black nose and wide nostrils.

His eyes are round, large and very penetrating. Although they are usually dark in color, there are also individuals with one or two blue eyes, a characteristic that is associated with an increased risk of deafness. Minnow eyes are allowed in blue individuals (variegated). Regardless of the color of the eyes, the eyes express calm and seriousness.

The coat of the Dunker consists of short hair, hard, tight and dense. Its coloration is a distinctive sign of the breed: they are either black with light fawn and white spots, or blue merle (ยฟbigarros?) and mottled with light fawn and white spots. Jet black coats with dark tawny markings are less desirable, and those in which white predominates (to the point of representing at least the 50% Of the surface) are considered undesirable by the norm.

Last, sexual dimorphism is not very marked in this breed: males and females are quite similar in size and weight.

Life expectancy: 12 years of age.

Size of Norwegian Hound

    – female weight: Of 24 to 25 kg
    – Male weight: Of 24 to 25 kg
    – female size: Of 47 to 53 cm.
    – Male size: Of 50 to 55 cm.

Character and skills ยซNorwegian Hound (Dunker)ยป

The Norwegian Hound is a fast and tenacious hunter with an above-average olfactory ability. They excel particularly in hunting hare and rabbit.

Being also gentle, loving, cheerful and friendly, they have all the qualities required to be an excellent companion dog. balanced, patients, tolerant and devoid of aggressiveness, they are very good playmates for children. But, it is important to note that a dog should never be left alone with a small child without adult supervision, and this applies to all races.

His total lack of aggressiveness and his attraction to humans, even for those you don't know, make it totally impossible to use as a guard dog. In effect, not reserved at all, shy, fearful or aggressive with strangers, rather they tend to welcome them positively and trust them. They are more likely to greet a malicious person with curiosity and licking them rather than barking to warn their master or make them understand that they better go their way.

His sociability extends to other dogs too. So, it is quite possible to share a house with a dog companion without fearing that conflict situations will multiply, and is generally friendly with those he meets on his walks.

With cats and other animals, things are a little more complicated. His hunting instinct naturally leads him to chase any small furry animal that is not part of the canine species.. Although he has grown up with him and must consider his little companion as a member of the family and not as a potential prey, risk can never be ruled out, so it is better to avoid such cohabitation. As for those that can be found on your walks, you probably want to chase them. So, it is preferable to keep it on a leash during excursions, to avoid any accident.

Dunker
Dunker

In any case, the fear that it will chase other animals does not mean that you should not take it out enough each day, knowing that you need a lot of activity to spend your great energy. Need at least 45 minutes of exercise per day, but his stamina makes him happy to go further if given the chance. It also, it is preferable to vary the pleasures to allow him to fully expend his energy: long walks, run through the park, sports with dogs, etc. Sports that require running (like canicross) and those that appeal to your senses (like tracking) they are the most recommended. In fact, this dog is very happy when he has to mobilize his physical and mental capacities. In any case, in addition to allowing you to exercise, all these activities reinforce the relationship with his master, which is especially important if you are hearing impaired.

From the above it follows that the Dunker not suitable for an elderly or very sedentary person, that I couldn't give you all the exercise you need. The ideal for him is a master of sport, and willing to take his partner in his various activities. Retirees may be right for him, if they are active enough.

In any case, life in the city is not ideal for him, that needs large spaces to fully develop. A house with a garden in the country is a much more appropriate environment to live in.. But, it is important to ensure that the garden is well fenced and that the environment is safe, as his instincts and hunting instincts soon lead him to follow leads and flee.

Once your need for exercise is satisfied, the Norwegian Hound has an easy and docile character; is far from being as stubborn as many hunting dog breeds. But, your sense of smell can make training difficult, as he is easily distracted by a scent and not really responsive to his master's commands.

Their propensity to bark can also be quite annoying. He is particularly prone to doing it if his master is away for a long time without having given him any exercise beforehand and without having the means to do it himself.. In fact, inactivity can be a burden and cause those behavior problems, as well as destruction, for example. But, as long as you have something to take care of in the absence of your family, not the type of dog that suffers a lot from separation anxiety.

Education ยซNorwegian Hound (Dunker)ยป

Like all the other hounds, the Norwegian Hound must be socialized from an early age. In other words, so that he becomes a balanced adult and has no trouble finding his place, should be given without delay a maximum of opportunities to meet all kinds of humans (veterinary, neighbors, delivery man, etc.), Other animals, but also to face various noises, smells and situations. This is even more important since he is easily distracted by his sense of smell..

The rules established in your education should also be taught to you from an early age, when your ability to learn and docility are at their best. As with any race, bad habits pick up quickly when he's still a puppy and become real problems when he gets older.

In any case, the Dunker it is a breed of dog that is easy to train and that listens to its master, as long as he uses a dog-friendly training method. Treatments generally prove to be very effective in positively reinforcing your good deeds and facilitating learning. But, sometimes it is necessary to show firmness and affirm your own authority to prevent this dogged dog from doing what he pleases. It can also be difficult to get their attention., given their tendency to be distracted by their sense of smell.

Since it has a strong inclination to follow its nose and to chase passing small animals, Teaching your dog to call back is especially important to avoid the risk of a frantic tug on the leash or running away if it moves freely.

It may also be helpful to try to teach him to channel his propensity to bark.. But, as it is deeply ingrained in him, should not be expected to be the calmest of dogs. If it is impossible to make him understand that some things do not necessarily require him to bark, at least he can be taught to stop on command.

Last, if the dog is deaf from birth, as is the case with a significant fraction of the representatives of the breed, the master must obviously adapt to this restriction: Training a deaf dog is not done in the same way as training another dog that is able to hear its master's voice.. Trust is then even more crucial in the relationship between the animal and its master., so that you can learn and live in good conditions despite your disability. Of course, communication is then done through non-verbal communication, and it's up to the teacher to adopt explicit body language, based on gestures and precise mimicry, specific for each indication you want to give.

Health ยซNorwegian Hound (Dunker)ยป

The Norwegian Hound is very resistant, generally have excellent health and very good longevity.

Used to living in harsh Norwegian weather, can tolerate cold and damp without difficulty. Their coat is naturally waterproof and offers good protection from the elements. On the other hand, shows some intolerance to high temperatures, even if it is able to adapt to a Mediterranean climate. You simply need to lighten up your activities during hot flashes, or at least privilege those that are carried out inside, to ensure that you always have access to a place in the shade or even air conditioning and to avoid any excessive physical exertion in the hottest hours.

Its small population and its limited diffusion prevent a very important deterioration of health, but it has been shown that it is predisposed to certain problems:

  • deafness, what is a hereditary disease. According to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA), almost the 75% of the population of the breed is today deaf in at least one, if not both ears;
  • hip dysplasia, a joint malformation that may be characterized by a hereditary predisposition. It can cause joint pain as well as difficulty moving;
  • Elbow dysplasia, which can also be favored by a hereditary predisposition. It is painful and leads to difficulty moving and the development of osteoarthritis;
  • progressive retinal atrophy, a hereditary and incurable eye disease. Causes loss of night vision first, then loss of daytime vision, to the point that the dog becomes totally blind;
  • Demodecic scabies, a contagious parasitic disease that causes itching and true discomfort to the dog, gradually losing appetite and sleep;
  • ear infections (otitis, etc.), due to its hanging shape.
  • It also, individuals used for hunting are exposed to the various risks associated with this activity: wounds, parasites, thorns, etc.

    It also, the Dunker has a strong appetite. How it is usually active, this is not usually a problem. But, if it is not, soon becomes overweight.

    Given the hereditary conditions to which the breed is predisposed, the breeder's work plays a decisive role in the adoption of a Norwegian Hound that he is in perfect health and that he will probably remain so. In addition to the results of genetic tests performed on the parents and the puppy to reduce the risk of such diseases, every serious and responsible breeder must be able to present a certificate of good health established by a veterinarian, as well as documents related to the vaccines administered.

    It also, when the dog is small and still growing, your bones and joints are particularly fragile: therefore, any excessively intense or prolonged physical exercise should be avoided, since I could pay it off one day or another, with potentially permanent sequelae (malformations, etc.).

    Last, it is necessary to consult a veterinarian at least once a year to ensure that the dog is in good health or, on the other hand, to be able to detect as soon as possible any problem whose symptoms are not yet visible. This health check is also an opportunity to carry out your immunization reminders, which are another essential lever to keep the dog in good health. Still on the prevention registry, it is the owner's responsibility to renew the antiparasitic treatments whenever necessary throughout the year, so your partner is never unprotected.

    Care and maintenance ยซNorwegian Houndยป

    A tough breed, the Norwegian Hound do not require much maintenance.

    But, they lose a lot of hair, so brushing your hair twice a week is not too much to help remove dead hairs and keep it in good condition. During their molting periods in spring and fall, when it should be done more often (even daily) to prevent hair growth throughout the house.

    Since his hair is not very dirty and therefore does not have a strong odor, bathing him two or three times a year is generally sufficient. In any case, a too frequent bath will make the sebum naturally present on the skin disappear, insulates and protects it from the elements. Having said that, do not hesitate to give him a bath if he has gotten very dirty, for example during a particularly muddy hunting trip. In any case, you can only use a shampoo specially designed for dogs, at the risk of damaging your skin.

    Dunker
    Dunker

    The ears, on the other hand, require special attention, since its hanging shape implies an increased risk of infections (ear infections, etc.). They must be cleaned every week with a damp cloth or a cleaning product specially designed for this purpose.. They should also be dried after each bath or after a long period of time in a damp place..

    Their eyes they must also be examined weekly and cleaned if necessary with a damp cloth.

    It is also necessary to brush the teeth of your dog every week or even every day to avoid the formation of dental plaque and its possible consequences (bad breath, diseases, etc.). A toothpaste specially designed for dogs should always be used.

    It also, it is important to regularly check your dog's claws to make sure they are not getting too long and to trim them if this is the case. This could not only hinder your walking, but you could also break and potentially injure yourself at the same time. Having said that, while you're active and spending long hours outdoors, natural wear and tear is usually enough to file them.

    To know how to proceed during maintenance sessions, it is useful to benefit from the experience of a veterinarian or a groomer the first time. In fact, whether the various procedures for grooming the coat, the ears, the eyes, your pet's teeth or claws are not done properly, not only will satisfactory results not be obtained, but the owner may even injure or injure his pet. It also, the owner should get used to his pet very soon, so that throughout his life he accepts to be manipulated without being rebellious.

    It also, when your pet returns from a long time in the wild, it is a good idea to systematically take a little time to inspect it carefully: parasites, spikes or dirt may have gotten into their fur, and may also have been injured.

    What price does a โ€œNorwegian Houndโ€ cost?

    In Norway, a puppy Dunker It costs around 7000 Norwegian crowns (a few 650 EUR). The sale price varies from one individual to another depending on the prestige of the breeding, the lineage of the dog and its intrinsic characteristics.

    So, whether you are in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada or elsewhere, who wants to adopt a Norwegian Hound you must opt รขโ‚ฌโ€นรขโ‚ฌโ€นfor the import solution. Character and skills

    When he's hunting, the Small swiss hound is tireless and relentless, exhibiting impressive endurance and strength of character. They tend to be lively and excitable, eager to do their job. Most of the Small swiss hound they are happy to hunt regardless, without any royal order from his master.

    Despite being bred to hunt, most breed members can make the transition from working bloodhound to family pet easily and are generally affectionate and demonstrative with their owners. They are good friends with children and other dogs, but they cannot be trusted with small animals, including cats and rabbits.

    The temperaments of individuals vary, and while some may be quiet and peaceful house guests, others may be excitable and jumpy. Dogs with more energy can often be taught to settle inside the house once they have been properly exercised.. Ideally, the exercise should take the form of hunting, as this not only burns off excess energy but also occupies your inquisitive mind. The dog Small swiss hound, little stimulated, tends to become a nuisance pet that can be difficult to train.

    Not being an aggressive dog, the Small swiss hound should not be used as a guard dog as it does not tend to scare off intruders and does not usually feel the need to guard your property.

    โ€œSmall Swiss Houndโ€ Training

    The phrase "small dog syndrome" may be mentioned when talking about Small swiss hound, as they have a reputation for acting like large dogs in small dog bodies. Full of confidence, lively and independent, this is not a breed for the novice trainer. Obedience work can be a particular challenge, since they have a free-spirited character and a mind of their own.

    Coaches must be firm and inflexible, keeping your training sessions short and interesting to keep the dog's interest. How this breed likes to assume a dominant position in the home, he should be taught his place from an early age, to avoid any bad behavior.

    most dogs Small swiss hound they are still used as hunting dogs in Switzerland today, meaning your exercise requirements are easily met during hunting season. In the case of non-working dogs, or when the hunting season is over, owners should take time to meet the needs of this active hound.

    A rural setting is the ideal place for Small swiss hound, who needs wide terrain to explore and does not enjoy being confined. It is essential that your property is securely fenced to avoid solo adventures.

    Health ยซSmall Swiss Houndยป

    There are not many diseases that affect the Small swiss hound more than other races, but there are a handful of conditions that should be watched in individuals:

    ear infections

    Hanging ears are prone to developing ear infections., particularly if a dog spends a lot of time outside wet and muddy. Keeping your ears clean can prevent this from becoming a problem..

    Hip Dysplasia

    Malformed hip joints can lead to lifelong discomfort and reduced mobility. x-rays of the hips (a process called โ€œhip scoringโ€) should be performed when a breeding dog is over one year of age to ensure that its hips are of a good enough quality to be passed down.

    Grooming ยซSmall Swiss Houndยป

    Although there are a number of different coat types within the breed, all are easy to maintain and need little in the way of grooming. Weekly brushing will suffice. The Small swiss hound you will only need to be bathed a few times a year. If owners feel the need to disguise their "dog smell" they can use dry shampoo, avoiding the risk of drying out their skin and coat.

    History

    It is said that the Swiss Hound is among the oldest members of the Group of Hounds. According to a 15th century letter to Ernst, Elector of Saxony (1441-86), Swiss working dogs were among the best. Images from the 17th century show packs of hounds "with the same color and the same size, "big heads and very long ears".

    Three centuries later, the german dog writer Richard Strebel wrote in ยซDie Deutschen Hundeยป (German dog breeds, 1903-05) that the hounds that lived separately in a restricted area of โ€‹โ€‹Switzerland therefore developed separately.

    In the decade of 1890, it seemed that purebred bloodhounds were marked for death in Switzerland, despite the breeding Schwyz Hound, Bernese Hound and Lucerne Hound. Some hounds were exported to Scandinavia and, thanks to the crossing with native hounds, the Stรถvares (scandinavian hounds) they were blooming. But at the same time, the Thurgauer Laufhund quietly disappeared in Switzerland, and the Aargauer Laufhund gave way to Jura Hound (Bruno Jura Hound).

    In 1903, J. Dust del Swiss Kennel Club founded the Schweizerische Laufhunde-Club (Swiss Hound Club) and in 1907 an appeal was made to save the Swiss hound of extinction. Then something remarkable happened: the breed club bought good quality Swiss hounds and gave them to prudent breeders and hunters. Test rules and regulations were developed and a series of obligations were established: to) only one dog at a time when hunting; b) the dog had to be under control when searching for game; c) a dog that disappeared during the hunt had to return to its master within half an hour; y d) the dog was to return as soon as the horn sounded, regardless of whether the dog was looking. Using these rules, the breed club tried to exclude disobedient dogs and forced owners to properly breed and train their dogs.

    Four varieties

    The development of Swiss Hound started in the decade of 1930, but it took time and effort. In 1937, only five hounds were entered in the Swiss herd book. The Dr. O. Vollenweider managed to gather 11 hound collectors in the city of Soleura, in northwestern Switzerland. Dogs suitable for breeding were selected and, in 1933, a breed standard was published. In the standard, the varieties were distinguished by coat color and pattern.

    In 1944, 150 Swiss hounds were entered in a hound exhibition. (as a neutral country, Switzerland did not participate in WWII) It was no longer forbidden to work with dogs that gave tongue, and bloodhounds of more than 20 inches (50 centimeters) to the cross.

    Attempts to save or restore the Laufhund de Argovia they were unsuccessful; in 1933, the breed standard was canceled. Four varieties remained: the Bernese Hound, the Jura Hound (Bruno Jura Hound), the Lucerne Hound and the Schwyz Hound. Their names connect them with cities and areas of Switzerland (Berne, Lucerne, Jura), or with Switzerland.

    It is said that between 1902 and 1922, a few 1.200 swiss hounds, mainly Schwyz Hound white-yellow, they were raised in Norway. Some years, there were more Swiss Hounds outside of Switzerland than in their country of origin. In 1993, about 1.000 copies of Lucerne Hound they lived in sweden.

    France is another importer. Seventy-five Jura Hound (Bruno Jura Hound) enrolled in an exhibition in Lyon in 1976. It is not surprising that the Jura is predominantly found in France and Switzerland, and that it extends to Germany. Since the 15th century, Swiss hounds were also exported to Italy. According to raven, they frequently crossed paths with his Italian cousin, the Italian short-haired Segugio.
